Daryl B. Abbott, 77, of Goshen, passed away peacefully at 4:38 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, 2024, at his home in Goshen with his family by his side.
He was born on March 6, 1947, to Albert and Verna (Hamilton) Abbott in Sturgis, Michigan. On Aug. 7, 1970, in White Pigeon, he married Sue Pipher; she survives. Daryl is survived by his wife of 54 years; their son, Bruce Abbott of Goshen; two daughters, Ashley Abbott of Elkhart and Heather (Jason) Abbott of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sister Cheryl Huff of Detroit, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
Daryl lived his life in service to others. After graduating from White Pigeon High School, he attended Goshen College, earning a degree in social work. He started his career as a social worker for the welfare department of Elkhart County and then spent over 30 years as the director of Child and Parent Services (CAPS). After his retirement from CAPS, he spent several years as the director of Loveway. He indelibly left his mark on these organizations as it was his passion and gift to help others. He received many awards throughout his esteemed career with the most recent award being given by Goshen College in 2023 for his Servant Leadership within the community.
Daryl's faith and family were at the forefront of his life. Together they had welcomed in and fostered 40 children in their home. He and his wife, Sue, were members of Bristol Community Church for over 30 years. He will always be remembered for his quiet strength, humbleness, kind heart and, of course, that great smile. He will be dearly missed by all who have had the privilege of knowing him.
Visitation for Daryl will be from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, at Bristol Community Church, 201 S. Division St., Bristol. There will also be one hour of visitation prior to the 11 a.m. funeral service on Friday, Oct. 18, also at the church. Services will be conducted by Pastor Gary Lewis. Burial will follow after the service at the White Pigeon Township Cemetery, White Pigeon, Michigan.
Donations in Daryl's memory can be made to Bristol Community Church, Loveway, or Child and Parent Services (CAPS). Online condolences may be offered at millerstewartfuneralhome.com.
