Phyllis Jean Walters, 94, of Nappanee, Indiana, died at 4:55 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 2, 2022, at Elkhart General Hospital.
Phyllis was born on Jan. 3, 1928, in Bremen, Indiana, to Charles and Ruby (Kimble) Guard. She was a 1946 graduate of Nappanee High School and lived her entire life in the Nappanee area. On Oct. 10, 1946, Phyllis married Kenneth J. "Kenny" Walters in Nappanee. He preceded her in death on Oct. 17, 2022.
Mrs. Walters had worked as a clerk for Nappanee Water and as a purchasing agent at Lux Company in Nappanee. Phyllis became a member of the Nappanee United Methodist Church in 1955 and faithfully attended for the rest of her life. She was instrumental in founding the Church Thrift Shop and volunteered her time there for many years. She was active in many different church circles and had also been a Campfire Girls Leader.
Most of all Phyllis loved her family. Her life revolved around her children and grandchildren and she was a loving wife to Kenny for 76 years. She loved planning family trips and fishing with her children and grandchildren at their cottage on Dewart Lake.
Phyllis is survived by her four children: Beth (Jerry) Huff of Nappanee, Steve (Honey) Walters of Nappanee, Wendy (Lisa) Walters of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Ron (Carole) Walters of Taylors, South Carolina; eight grandchildren: Krystal Beer, Nicole Wiggins, Jade Sipic, Mitch Walters, Chet Walters, Ben Walters, Chloe Walters, and Claire Gooch; 15 great-grandchildren; and her twin brother, Dean (Sally) Guard of Nappanee. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers: Wayne, Paul and Robert Guard; and three sisters: Aletha Corwin, Lucille Parcell, and Marjorie Roeder.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9, at the Nappanee United Methodist Church. Funeral services will then begin at 1 p.m., with Pastor Kevin Reed of Nappanee United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Union Center Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in Phyllis' name can be given to the Nappanee United Methodist Church Thrift Shop.
