David Potter Obituary

David M. Potter IV

June 12, 1940 - June 8, 2025

David M. "Dave" Potter, IV passed away peacefully on June 8, 2025, just four days shy of his 85th birthday, in Spring Creek, Nev. Born on June 12, 1940, in East Orange, NJ, Dave lived an extraordinary life full of adventure, purpose, and heart.

Dave earned his Bachelor's degree in Glaciology and Geology and spent his early years working summers on the Juneau Icefield during the 1950s. A true mountaineer at heart, he trained with the first American team to summit Mt. Everest and still holds the record for the longest continuous stay on Mt. Rainier, Wash.

He was a proud recipient of the 1994 Ryder Truck Driver of the Year Award, honored for driving an astonishing three million miles accident-free a testament to his focus, dedication, and professionalism. He loved the road and found joy in a long-haul drive and the hum of a big rig engine.

Dave had a passion for all things fast and mechanical, especially race cars. He was known for transforming mid-century cars into unique, high-performance machines. When he wasn't on the road or under a hood, you could find him chatting with just about anyone. Dave never met a stranger he couldn't talk to. His knowledge was vast, his stories were legendary, and his jokes were always ready.

A generous and active member of his community, Dave volunteered at the Lamoille Church, where he could often be found cutting the grass or lending a hand. He also served as President of the Elko HAM Radio Club for several years, sharing his technical know-how and connecting with fellow enthusiasts.

Dave is survived by his loving wife, Jan Potter; his children, Amiee Potter, Holly Potter Caswell, Allen Fowler, David Potter V, Kim Potter Mitchell, Courtney Marin Rowley, and Felicia Potter; as well as ten grandchildren, all of whom will miss his warmth, wisdom, and wild sense of humor.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 26 at 1 p.m. at Lamoille Church in Lamoille, Nev. Friends and family are invited to gather, share stories, and honor a life well-lived.

Race fast, climb all the mountains you want, and eat all the ribs and peach pie you can. We love you, Dave, and we will miss you more than words can say.
