CHARLES CANTRELL Obituary

CANTRELL Brigadier General (US Army ret.) Charles Cantrell - went to the great artillery field in the sky on Tuesday, January 31, 2012. He was born in Eaton Colorado in 1918 and lived in El Paso since 1970. He entered the Army as an ROTC honor graduate from Colorado State University in 1939 and through his 30 year military career was a survivor of Pearl Harbor and Guadalcanal in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He often recounted that the standard issue for a Calvary Captain was a tent and a horse. He was a graduate of the Command and General Staff College, the Armed Forces Staff College, and the National War College. His assignments included Monterey CA, Wahiawa, HI; Washington DC, Keflavik, Iceland; several cities in Germany, Ft. Carson CO, and Ft. Bliss TX, culminating as the Commander of the Air Defense Artillery School at Ft. Bliss. His military awards include; the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, and the American Defense Service Medal. Following his military retirement, he served as the lead project manager of the construction for the El Paso Civic Center and as Director of the Physical Plant of UTEP. He is predeceased by his wife Evelyn, his son, Stephen and his son-in-law MG (US Army ret.) Louis Del Rosso. He is survived by his daughter Marilyn Del Rosso of Williamsburg, VA, five grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, February 3, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery with full military honors. May his martini glass always be full. Services entrusted to Martin Funeral Home West, 128 N.
