David Appleby Obituary

David A. Appleby

Our beloved David A. Appleby passed into the loving arms of Jesus on March 23, 2021. He was a deeply loved and respected father, brother, uncle and friend. David had a wonderful sense of humor, was noble, kind, humble and greatly admired by family, friends, clients, the medical professionals who treated him, and the El Paso business community. It is common to hear people say, "David is the nicest guy in the world!" David exhibited and believed that success requires integrity, compassion, commitment, hard work and dedication. He instilled these values in his sons, step-daughters, family members and employees.

David was born in El Paso on January 29, 1967, as the youngest of seven children. He graduated from Ysleta High School in 1984 and from UTEP in 1991 with a BA in Accounting. He began his career at KPMG, followed by a stint as CFO for Petro Stopping Centers. He was a partner at Pate & Appleby, LLP for over 18 years and was devoted to the exemplary firm, the colleagues that were like family, and his clients where he poured his heart and soul into their businesses. David was an extraordinary public servant and loved the great state of Texas. He was honored to be appointed by Governor Perry to serve on the Texas State Securities Board from 2011 until his resignation due to his health in 2019. Serving with this Board and Staff was one of the highlights of his life. He also served on numerous local boards including the First Presbyterian Preschool and St. Clements Parish School.

David courageously fought a 6 1/2 year battle with prostate cancer. He was sad about leaving El Paso for treatment and not being able to see his many special friends before he left, but he held onto the relationships and memories that meant so much to him.

David was extremely proud when his sons joined the Texas Longhorn family. Matthew graduates from the McCombs School of Business at UT in May 2021. Nathan graduated Cathedral High School in 2020 and is now attending UT and majoring in Biochemistry.

David is survived by his adoring sons, Matthew and Nathan, and step-daughters, Victoria and Lily Larkin; siblings: Cecily (Bob) McKinley (Austin), Rick (Roma) Appleby (El Paso), Ellen Whitlatch (Steve Johnson) (El Paso), Michelle (David) Anderson (Austin), and Steve (Vivian) Appleby (Chico, CA); and many other well loved family members. He is reunited in God's presence with his beloved wife Gigi (Licon), parents Betty and Vincent, brother Michael, his grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, along with several dear friends that went before him.

A special thank you to home-keeper Maria Luisa Alvarez for her care and devotion to David, Matthew and Nathan for so many years.

David and Gigi were very involved with their young sons at First Presbyterian Preschool when Gigi passed in 2005. At that time, a beautiful memorial garden was created there in her honor - "Gigi's Garden." To honor David and his ability to see things from a higher perspective, "David's Tree House" will be built in "Gigi's Garden." Donations may be made to First Presbyterian Preschool, In honor of David Appleby, 1340 Murchison Dr., El Paso, TX 79902. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Cecily, May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. I know David was loved so much by you and all the family. His battle was prolonged so he could see his boys grow into young men. Our Lord has a plan and purpose. My love to all of you.
