Gloria Woodard Obituary

Gloria L. Woodard, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at the age of 80. Mrs. Woodard was born in Columbus, Georgia but lived most of her life in El Paso. She retired from teaching with El Paso Independent School District and remained active within the community. Gloria was preceded in death by her husband Roy Woodard and daughter Shari Croom. Surviving her departure with cherished memories are her devoted daughter Debra Thornton of Tampa FL, grandchildren Michael Rector of El Paso, TX, Brandice Felix of Lawton, OK, Michael Croom of El Paso, Daniel Thornton and Briahna Thornton of Tampa, FL, four great grandchildren Michael Rector Jr., Carlos Felix Jr., Arianna and Alyanna Rector. Other survivors include her sisters of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, and a multitude of family and friends all whom she loved dearly. Visitation will be Monday May 5th from5-8 at Sunset Funeral Home, 750 N. Carolina. Funeral services will be held Tuesday May 6th at 11:30 at Sunset Funeral Home followed by interment at Fort Bliss Cemetery at 2:00 pm. Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home-East. While at Rusk, you were good friends with my mother (the cafe mgr) Judy Pierce.
You guys always were visiting when you could and became best of friends. Passing right after your daughter is very much something that only God could have arranged.

I was one of her students at Rusk Elementry from 1975 through 1980. I will never forget the funny names she would call me and the other boys if we did'nt listen to her. I loved to get her upset at me just to hear those funny names. I will never forget how she would protect me from the bullies. I will never forget Mrs. Woodard!! God bless her soul and her family.

My heart goes out to Mrs. Woodard's family. I had the great privilege of being one of her students in the 70's at Rusk Elem. Later in life she became a coach to my own children, who had the same pleasure of seeing her great smile and her belief that children were all loving. We will greatly miss you!

My condolence to the Woodard family. I had the pleasure of having Coach Woodard as my PE coach at Rusk Elementary School back in the ‘70s. I have such fond memories of her and still remember her laughter. She was the greatest person in the world. I will never forget her.
