GONZALO ROMERO

Gonzalo Julian Romero joined the Lord on Saturday, December 1st, 2012. Gonzalo was born on January 10th, 1922 in Miami, Arizona and was a resident of El Paso since 1926. He served his country during World War II by entering into active service on January 5th, 1943 with the US Army. He participated in the invasion of Normandy (D-Day) as a field lineman, telephone/telegraph and radio operator as a Sergeant with the Anti-Tank Company of the 147th Infantry. During the war he assisted in setting up communication systems in France, Belgium, and Germany. Discharged honorably on December 27th, 1945 and then re-enlisted with the 82nd Airborne Division on July 22nd, 1948. He completed the Basic Airborne Course and became a qualified Paratrooper and Gliderman. Gonzalo is survived by his beloved wife Esther Arras Romero, his daughters Helen Torres and husband Nick, Irma Mendez, Diana Vasquez and Maverick Vasquez, and son David Romero and wife Veronica. Grandchildren Nick Jr., Yvette and husband Raul, Michael, Richard, Veronica, Maverick Austin, Justin, Amber, Stephen, Alexandria, Aaron, Sarah and preceded in death by Kathryn. Great-grandchildren: Victoria, Angelina, Nick III, and Eric. Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 5, 2012 from 4:00pm until 8:00pm with Rosary at 7:00pm at Sunset Funeral Homes 480 N. Resler. Funeral mass will be held on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at 1:00pm at St. Matthew's Church 400 W. Sunset Dr., with interment to follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
