I my mind Leon Metz was the dean of western writers and I have not only read his books but I have researched his papers in the special collections library at UTEP. I do research on a ranch Leon visited while compiling his book John Selman Gunfighter. He will be missed by many of us and his kind is a rarity.

I did not personally know Mr. Metz, but I was very familiar with one of his books, "John Selman, Texas Gunfighter" When Selman was living in Throckmorton County, Texas ,he was a partner and close friend of John M. Larn, whose property my family owns today. Leon visited my parents, at our ranch, while he was writing his biography, and my parents took him to the Tecumseh ranch where John and his family lived. I am very grateful to Mr. Metz for writing his biography of John Selman
