When I interned for Judge Martinez he was astonished to learn that as an El Paso native I had never been to Chico’s Tacos and he quickly remedied that. He lead by example, and what a wonderful example that was and will continue on through all that he mentored.

Our deepest condolences, lo sentimos muchísimo de todo corazón. He
had been a friend for many yrs. to my son Sergio & a student at Ross MS
for my husband, Coach Sergio Guerrero. He was one of the finest friends
and would ask for both my son & my husband when I saw him. He used
to ask me to be the keynoter for the new citizens in our USA. I am so so
sorry for your loss. Death is our shadow and we do not know the time or
place it will take us. I feel too soon and so unexpected for Phil's death.
We will always love & respect him, for he brought the best values to all.
Paz, amor y bendiciones, Rosa Guerrero y familia

To the Martinez family: Thank you for sharing Philip’s Rosary and Funeral Mass virtually on Facebook Live. Lauren, your eulogy was wonderful in honoring your father. It brought smiles to my face, and yes, also tears to my eyes. Your dad is very proud of both you and your sister. My best to your mom.
With remembrance from the old days - his childhood friend and classmate.

My sincere condolences to the family of Phillip Martinez. I went to school with him from the 6th to 9th grades at Ross Jr. High. He was a dear friend and classmate who even then, exhibited great character and heart. This is a great loss for El Paso and I pray that our Good Lord keeps Phillip in his loving hands and gives his family strength and grace. Vaya con Dios old friend.

Judge Martinez did my Harvard interview in the early '90s. I was very nervous and not sure that I would fit in at an Ivy League school. Phil and I had a wonderful conversation that was inspirational and encouraging. Our paths crossed again when I began doing interviews as a Harvard alumnus, and I was grateful for his friendship. I saw firsthand the countless hours and effort Judge Martinez gave to support our young people in El Paso. May he rest in eternal peace.

I did some work with Phil when we were both practicing law in El Paso. I now teach at regional HSI university in San Angelo, Angelo State University. To my students who are insecure about going on to law school or into public service, I hold Phil as an example of how much you can achieve through the state school system and how you can be successful while still being a courteous and moral person.

Phil was a wonderful person. We went to the same schools and had a lot of the same classes together. I knew in my heart he would grow up to be a person of greatness. And he did. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Martinez Family and all who knew and loved him. Sincerely, Eileen Gillespie-Metzkow and Husband Peter. Burges Class 1975. ❤❤
