STEPHEN BYRD

STEPHEN BYRD SUMMITVILLE, IN: Stephen Michael Byrd completed his earthly journey on July 21, 2025; the beloved husband, father, and grandfather was 75 years old. Steve was born on October 12, 1949, the son of Percy Byrd and Janice Ayers. Though his story began in Fort Myers, Florida, and more recently he was a resident of Kentucky, Steve spent most of his life in the Summitville area. He was a 1968 graduate of Summitville High School, after which he served honorably in the United States Army with time in Vietnam. Steve would go on to enjoy a career driving a semitruck and retired in 2008. He was a long-time member of the Teamsters Union. On May 14, 1999, he was married to Anita Byrd, and they shared 26 years together. A hard worker and a true patriot, Steve was the embodiment of the American everyman. He was a gearhead at heart. He loved fixing up old cars, going to car shows and cheering on his favorite NASCAR drivers. He also enjoyed being outdoors, tinkering in his barn, and working around their 90-acre farm. He took great pride in having a beautiful yard and maintained property. Steve cared deeply for his family and friends, and his memory will long remain in their thoughts and their hearts. Survivors include: Wife Anita Byrd of Adolphus, Kentucky Daughter Amber (Brad) Blalock of Summitville, Indiana Son Josh (Jamie) Walker of Whispering Pines, North Carolina Daughter Ashley (Tyler Brunelle) Walker of Fort Lauderdale, Florida Grandchildren Ella, Lila, Ann, Clara, and Bradley Walker; Joel and Ariah Turner; and Remington "Remy" Brunelle Sister Deb (Steve) Walters Brother Jerry Byrd Several nieces, nephews, and cousins Along with his parents, Percy Byrd and Janice (Max) Ayers, Steve is preceded in death by his brother, Terry. Steve's wishes were to be cremated, and he is to be interred at Vinson Memorial Park. A graveside ceremony with friends and family will take place at 10:30am this Saturday, August 2, 2025. A Celebration of Life will begin at 2:00pm the same day at the Elks Lodge #368 in Elwood. All friends and family are welcomed to attend.
