TEDDY HARBIT
Teddy (Ted) Morgan Harbit, age 90, of Summitville, passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2025 in the home of his daughter and son (in-law) who were blessed to care for him over the past 14 months as he fought like a champ after losing his leg and battled Alzheimer's. In his last moments, his family finds comfort knowing he entered the loving arms of our Heavenly Father surrounded by Rich, Julia, Donggun, and a dear caregiver, Maille, who all helped hold his hands and prayed over him as they told him once again what an incredible husband, father, grandpa, son, and brother he has been and that God will be welcoming him.
He met the love of his life at Frankton High School while he was the business teacher and basketball coach and Mary Ann was the English teacher and cheerleading coach. They married in 1969, had their daughter Melissa, and shared 55 truly happy years of marriage together before Mary Ann unexpectedly passed last year while Ted was in emergency surgery.
Before retiring from Madison Grant School Corporation as the Athletic Director, Ted had an impressive athletic career as an all-star athlete all the way through college. He later coached every single sport over the years at Frankton and Madison Grant before becoming an administrator.
Over the years, Ted lived a second life as an NHRA Hall of Fame race car driver, setting records and winning national titles up until he was 88 years young! He was quiet about this part of his life, as it was more of a passion that began at age 15 that just took on a life of its own and became the perfect outlet for stress and fulfillment of joy alongside his career as a teacher and athletic director.
More than all of this, he was a protective and loving husband, incredible Daddy, doting Grandpa, and loyal friend. A living example of strong Christian character, morals, and ethics, Ted had often been described as a man who led by quiet example rather than words. He did so much for others - students, colleagues, fellow racers, and those in need - often anonymously so no one would ever have any idea.
Ted is survived by his daughter and son (in-law) Missy and Rich Rust; and two sons, Marc (Teresa Wesley) Harbit, and David (Judy) Harbit; granddaughters Morgan Rust, Julia (Donggun) Kim; granddaughter Angie (Brad) Ehman; grandson DJ (Lauren) Harbit; and granddaughter Paige (Tyler) McPherson; several great-grandchildren; and nephews George Free and Douglas McCord.
Ted was preceded in death by what he would say were the world's best parents: Arthur Lloyd Harbit and Thelma F. (Shell) Harbit, and his beloved big sister who always looked after him, Phyllis McCord.
Visitation will be Saturday, August 30, 2025, from 10:00AM - 12:00PM with the Funeral Service at 12:00PM , at Harper & Dunnichay Funeral Home, 305 E. Sigler St., Frankton, IN 46044. Rev. Roger Brooks will be officiating with burial following at Memorial Park Cemetery in Anderson.
