Barbara Pewitt Obituary

Barbara Joan Pewitt, known to all as Joann, nee Tewell, 78, Union, departed this life Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016, at her daughter's home surrounded by the love of her family.

Joann was born Dec. 8, 1937, in Lawrenceville, Ill., the daughter of Fred Tewell and wife Elvina Jane, nee Lancaster, known to all as Jane. She was united in marriage to Allen Devere Pewitt Jr. Sept. 1, 1956, and six children came to bless this union.

Joann was a Christian, having been raised in the Baptist faith. For many years, she and Allen lived in Brashear, and during those years, she enjoyed staying home and caring for her home and family. After Allen passed away, she moved to Union to be near her children and mother. In her younger years, Joann worked as a certified nurses aide at St. Joseph's on the Hill in Eureka. Joann loved to cook, especially for her children and grandchildren. Crocheting was her favorite pastime, and many of her hand-crocheted pieces will be treasured family heirlooms. Sewing and cake decorating were other hobbies she enjoyed, and in recent years, she enjoyed watching television. Nothing made her happier than the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Joann is survived by one son, Tom Pewitt, St. Clair; two daughters, Dorothy Hampton and husband Ronald, Union, and Vera Patton and husband Patrick, St. Clair; one brother, Fred Tewell and wife Debbie, Foley, Ala.; one stepsister, Imogene Joseph, St. Louis; siblings-in-law, Dorothy Pewitt, St. Clair, Shirley Rogers and husband Jim, Sullivan, and Ray Pewitt, Tullahoma, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; great- and great-great-nieces, and -nephews; cousins; other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen D. Pewitt Jr.; one son, Freddie Pewitt; two daughters, Tammera Pewitt and Alma Pewitt; her parents, Fred Tewell and Jane Tewell Cope; stepfather, Audrey Cope; and one sister, Shirley Tewell.

A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 11, at Russell Colonial Funeral Home, St. Clair, with the Rev. Jim Watson officiating.

Interment was in Crestview Memorial Park, St. Clair.
