George Bocklage Obituary

George Edward Bocklage, 83, Washington, passed away Saturday, Feb. 27, at Mercy Hospital Washington.

George, son of the late Theodore William and Agnes Esther (Whelton) Bocklage, was born Aug. 9, 1937, in Washington. He received his education at St. Francis Borgia Grade and High Schools. He graduated from St. Louis University. George held a bachelor's degree in U.S. history. He spent two years in the U.S. Army. He worked for the family business, Bocklage Brothers Clothing, later Bocklage Menswear, for over 60 years. He owned the store in Washington for many years prior to its closing at the time of his retirement. He once served on the Washington City Council and was instrumental in the project to create and build the Washington Airport.

George held many interests in his life, most notably American history. He spent more than 25 years in various active roles at the Washington Historical Society. George was currently on the board of the Deutschheim Verein at Hermann and was a longtime member of various other historical societies, including the State Historical Society of Missouri. He edited books, made presentations about local history, appeared in first-person impersonations of local historical figures for school groups, acted as museum docent and did his fair share of keeping the museum clean and functioning smoothly. He was a connoisseur of fine wine, most notably Missouri wines, and was often consulted as such. In past years, he was very active in the annual Art Fair and Winefest. George was an avid gardener, bird watcher, art collector and reader, but above all else, he was a loyal and welcome presence in the lives of his countless friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Sister M. Inez Bocklage, S.S.N.D. (Jane Frances Bocklage), and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Among his survivors are one sister, Sharon Bocklage, Hermann; cousins; special friends and caregivers, John and Vicki Beuke; and many treasured friends.

Per George's request, there will be no formal funeral services.

George's family and friends are being served by Oltmann Funeral Home, Washington.
