Melvin Joseph Mueller

1932 - 2022

Melvin Joseph Mueller was born March 23, 1932 in St. Clair to Aloys and Helen, nee Donner, Mueller. He passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2022 in Washington, at the age of 90 years.

Melvin grew up in St. Clair, and attended St. Clare of Assisi Grade School. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1953 and proudly served his country during the Korean War. Melvin achieved the rank of Corporal and was honorably discharged in 1956. Melvin was united in marriage to Mary Ann Holdmeier on May 28, 1955. The couple made their home in Washington, and remained there for the rest of their years together.

At age 14, Melvin began working at Lewis Cafe, as a cook in St. Clair. Except for the years he spent in the Army, Melvin continued to work for Lewis Cafe, eventually working his way up to manager, until he retired at age 63. Melvin enjoyed going to the casino, meeting his friends daily for breakfast, and serving as the soup chef for St. Francis Borgia Soup Night. Melvin was a "foodie" and loved to cook and eat. He was very appreciative of those who prepared meals for him and brought delicious treats for him to enjoy when his health no longer allowed him to cook. Melvin was a member of St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Washington and a member of Western Catholic Union.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Aloys and Helen Mueller; his wife, Mary Ann Mueller; one brother, Johnny Mueller; and one sister, Theresa Tillison.

He is survived by one sister, Judy Harper, St. Clair; one brother, Tom Mueller and wife Grace, St. Louis; brother-in-law, Raymond Tillison; special friend, Arlene Barnhart, Union ; and close friends, Joette Reidy and husband Ed, and John Lochirco and wife Missy, both of Washington; other relatives and friends.

Funeral Mass was celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church, Washington, with Rev. Mike Boehm officiating.

Burial with full military honors followed in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are preferred to St. Francis Borgia Church.
