Dr. Thomas J. Mitchell

1933 - 2024

Dr. Thomas James Mitchell, 90, St. Clair, departed this life Monday, April 1, 2024, at his home, surrounded by the love of his family.

Thomas, son of Thomas Mitchell and wife Frances Mitchell, nee Teacher, was born June 14, 1933, in Washington, D.C. In May of 1978, he was united in marriage to Henrietta "Penny" Ossendorf, and their families were joined as one.

Thomas was a Christian and had been attending Eternal Promises Community Church in St. Clair. He spent almost 50 years providing medical care to the community in his medical practice. In his younger years, he enjoyed going boating and horseback riding. Thomas and Penny also enjoyed going to the movies and to dinner with friends and family. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan and loved watching and going to the games. What meant most to him was time spent with family. His family held a very special place in his heart, as he did in theirs. The love they shared and the many precious memories they created together will be cherished by them all forever.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Penny Mitchell, St. Clair; his sons, Michael Mitchell, DeSoto, Gary Mitchell, Imperial, Lee Young and wife Lisa, Union; his daughter, Margie Mitchell, Hillsboro; his brother-in-law, Warren Lewis, Bowling Green; his grandchildren, Rachel Purschke, Michaela Mitchell, Christopher Mitchell, Loren Tyler and husband Jason, Ardell Young, Avery Young, and Adalee Young; his great-grandchildren, Lillian and Lincoln Purschke, Mia and Kaiden Tyler; nieces and nephews; great- and great-great nieces and -nephews; cousins; and many friends.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Frances Mitchell.

A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 6, at Russell Colonial Funeral Home, St. Clair, with Pastor Jeff Tobler officiating.

Interment was at Crestview Memorial Park, St. Clair.
