Bernice Mantsch Obituary

Bernice L. Johnson Mantsch, 85, of Erie, passed away peacefully, on Monday, October 15, 2018, at St. Mary's Home of Erie.

She was born in Erie, on October 12, 1933, a daughter of the late Wilfred and Margaret Sperry Johnson.

Bernice graduated from East High School and went on to work at Shade's Auto before becoming a homemaker. She was an active member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church. She was an avid reader and enjoyed volunteer work and knitting. Throughout the years, she donated many items to McKinley Elementary and St. Vincent Health Center.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas "T.J." Johnson.

Survivors include her husband, Howard "Butch" Mantsch; one daughter, Janice Inter and her husband, David, of Erie; two sons, James Mantsch and his wife, Cheryl, of Erie, and Jeffrey Mantsch and his wife, Maggie, of Bradford; two sisters, Catherine Lewis of Ashtabula, Ohio, and Helen Finney and her husband, Lester, of Beaver, Pa.; three brothers, Ronald Johnson of Florida, Robert Johnson and his wife, Helen, of Florida, and Frederick Johnson of Seattle, Wash.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., on Wednesday (today) from 3 to 7 p.m. and are invited to services there on Thursday at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Erie County Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. Stephen's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 940 E. 22nd St., Erie, PA 16503 or Mercy Terrace Apartments, 430 E. Grandview Blvd., Erie, PA 16504.

Dear Butch, Jan, Jeff, Jim and families,I was so sad to hear of Bernice's passing. I have so many fond memories of reunion picnics, New Year's Eve parties, graduations...all great family time spent together. We need to keep those times close to our hearts. When someone you love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a treasure. Hugs to all of you.
