Betty Allburn Obituary

Betty M. Kern Allburn Betty M. Kern Allburn, age 83, a resident of North East, formerly of Erie, died Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at Golden Living Center Western Reserve following an extended illness. She was born on October 28, 1925 in Erie, the oldest daughter of the late Robert C and Elizabeth M. Kern. Betty was a 1944 graduate of Villa Maria Academy and worked as an executive secretary at the Erie Resistor Corporation. Betty married the “love of her life" James N. Allburn Jr. on November 14, 1946 upon his discharge from the United States Army. After her marriage she joined her husband in his family’s business Allburn Florists. Betty worked side by side with her loving husband at the 7th and Parade Street store and later at the 17 West 7th Street location. In 1969 Betty embarked on a new career at Saint Vincent Health Center becoming Administrative Assistant to the medical director of the rehabilitation center. She later assumed the position of Director of Volunteer Services until her retirement. Betty was a member of numerous social and civic organizations including JC’s and ZONTA II. She was a founding member of Our Lady of Peace Church; where she was a rosary altar society member and summer festival organizer. Her retirement years were spent in the sun, sand and surf “madly in love” with her husband Jim at their lake front home. Betty was a beautiful, vivacious and caring woman, a loving wife, wonderful mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, James N. Allburn Jr. by only 38 hour and 47 minutes. She is survived by her three sons, James N. Allburn III and his wife Kathryn of Fairview, Timothy R. Allburn and his wife Bridget of North East and Peter P. Allburn of Ocean Grove, N.J.; one sister, Rita Denmark of Fla.; one brother, Robert Kern of Fla. and four grandchildren, James N. Allburn IV of Fairview, Megan D. Allburn, Esquire of Washington, DC, Nicholas S. and Trevor J. Allburn both of North East. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. No calling hours will be observed. A memorial mass will be announced at a later date. Memorials may be made to the McCord Library, 32 West Main Street, North East, PA 16428 or to the Community Nurses of North East, 7 Park Street, North East, PA 16428. The John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, is handling arrangements. To send condolences visit www.orlandofuneralhome.com. Sign the guestbook at www.GoErie.com/obits

As a volunteer at St. Vincent's many year ago I have fond thoughts of Betty as our leader. What a fine, beautiful lady. And Jim would arrive each day after work to pick her up to go home for the day. I lost track of them when she left her position at the hospital but can see they had a wonderful retirement together.

Sorry to hear of the passing. Lost contact with that side of the family for quite a while. Jan and I are in SE Ohio running a child protection nonprofit and bringing an invention to market. It's about 5 hrs from Erie. Sister Sue is retired with husband Bucky near Annapolis. Mom, Betty's sister in law, passed away peacefully last Fall. I would like to catch up on things with the nephews & aunt Helen. One of my board members is at Gannon Univ.

My condolences to the Allburn family. My mother spent many hours shopping at the store and I always remember the Allburn's as very nice people to deal with. A part of Erie history is gone.

Your parents were wonderful people and have been thought of often.
Although life takes us each on a different journey, we must live for an audience of one!
I know in my heart your mom and dad are both seated side by side in heaven hearing the words, "well done my good and faithful servants!' Let us rejoice in our Lord and Savior who loves each of us so much that He gave His life for ours.
You are each in my thoughts and prayers and know that God's love will comfort you as you lean on Him.
I will cherish the memories of two beautiful people.
Hugs...

I knew your parents many years ago as a waitress at Freeport Restaurant - they were wonderful, kind people - their love that was spoken of in their obit was always evident.

Condolences to the Allburn family. i also just would like to add that the obituary was beautifully written. I only "knew" Mrs. Allburn from the floral business but from reading the obit. ,it is clear she was a beautiful soul whose passing shall be mourned and whose presence will be missed. Sympathy to all who knew her.
