David Stillings Obituary

"Tempus Fugit"

David Mathay Stillings, age 86, died on Tuesday, November 24, 2015, at his home, in the company of his family and dogs. David was born on April 26, 1929, the son of David McClain Stillings and Helen Irene (Mathay) Stillings.

He and his younger brother William Keith Stillings grew up in Sharon, Pa. After graduating Sharon High School in 1947, David worked for Sharon Steel before enrolling at Kent State University in 1948. He had completed three years at Kent when he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1951. In the USAF, he trained as an aircraft mechanic for B29 bombers and spent three years flying B29s as a flight engineer for the 58th Weather Squadron at the Eielson AFB, Alaska. Upon his discharge in 1955, David began working for Packard Electric in Warren, Ohio, where he remained until 1961 when he left to complete his teaching degree at the California University of PA (B.A., Industrial Arts, 1962). In 1958, he married Brenda Rose Bowser of Sharon, Pa., and they moved to Erie, Pa., in 1963. In Erie, he taught Industrial Arts at Tech Memorial (1963-1967) while attending Edinboro University (M.S., Guidance and Counseling, 1966). In 1966, he became an Academic Counselor for the Evening and Summer Residency programs at Behrend College and continued in this position until 1987. In 1967, he became a guidance counselor at McDowell High School in Millcreek Township, having spent summers building the first boardwalk trails at the Asbury Woods Nature Center. He continued to work for the Millcreek School District until his retirement in 1991.

David was an avid musician who sang in the choir at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in Erie, and for a short time in the mid-1960s, sang and played trumpet in the house band at the Maennerchor Club. He was an accomplished bridge player and became a "Certified Master" in the ACBL. David taught himself clock repair and spent 25 years repairing clocks for friends and family, and part-time for Les Crago Jewelers. David was a member of the Masonic Jerusalem Lodge #19 in Ohio, the Scottish Rite Valley of Erie, and the Zem Zem Shrine.

In 2013, due to failing health, David and Brenda moved to Reno, Nev., to live with family.

David is survived by his wife, Brenda; his daughter, Lisa (Reno, Nev.); son, Keith (Skippack, Pa.); their respective spouses, Simon Poulson and Mary (Stahl) Stillings; his faithful dachshund, Alfie; and his adopted red heelers, Jaz and Max.

There will be no services, and in lieu of flowers, friends could make a memorial donation to one of David's favorite charities: Boys Town www.boystown.org" target="_blank">(www.boystown.org), the Shriners Hospitals for Children http://www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/donate" target="_blank">(http://www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/donate), or the Erie Humane Society http://www.humanesocietyofnwpa.com/donate" target="_blank">(http://www.humanesocietyofnwpa.com/donate).

Oh my gosh! I was just talking about Mr Stillings this week! He was my guidance counselor at McDowell and helped me find the small liberal arts college I went to - Wittenberg University in Springfield OH. I had never even heard of it and it turned out to be a great decision! I loved it there! In an interesting twist, he had also mentioned Bridgewater Univ in MA, just south of Boston, which I had never heard of either. I decided it was too far away. And right now, I am actually visiting my sister-in-law and family who live in the town of Bridgewater MA! (I still live in Erie) What a coincidence! He truly is forever in my heart!

As I have read thru the Guest book postings I'm brought to tears at such fond memories of Mr. Stillings. He was my guidance counselor at McDowell. He brought hope to me during a time in my life that I couldn't see very much hope. He always had a kind word and smile. Every Friday he'd pass by and say "TGIF" with such enthusiasm you couldn't help but smile back and instantly feel better. His door was ALWAYS open and there was never a time limit. Everyone who knew him was touched in a positive way. He rests know in Heaven and we thank God for his life with us. May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

We worked with Dave at McDowell Intermediate High School. He was not only one of the best guidance councilors there, but was a one of a kind, "special man". He had an outgoing personality and an infectious smile that lit up his entire face. You loved being around him. He always had a kind word to share with you and loved to bring a smile to your face. He was missed when he left and he will be missed now. Our loss is heaven's gain.

So sorry to learn of Mr. Stillings passing. He was my guidance counselor in 1986. Without a doubt, I would not have gone to college without his encouragement to do so & his belief that I could handle it. All students should be as fortunate to have a counselor such as him. My sincere condolences to his family.

A Tech Memorial classmate informed me of Mr. Stillings passing. My friends at Tech entered 9th grade from the parochial school system in Erie. We were required to take General Shop which gave us a insight to woodworking, machining, electrical, and sheetmetal. We then would choose our vocational area for the next 3 years. Mr Stillings taught all the areas in one room with about 30/40 students. He was a very knowledgeable instructor and always took the time to answer one on one student questions. I had the additional pleasure of running into him on the Behrend campus while I was a Master student. The meeting was accidental, but he took the time to discuss my life at that time. He was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable in the trades. He influenced many of my classmates to make positive decisions on a pathe to pursue as a career. On behalf of the graduating Tech Memorial class of 1967, as the class President, I offer the family our condolences and sympathy. May God Bless his eternal soul for a life of commitment to his fellow man. God Bless.

I had the pleasure and honor to work with Dave at MIHS in Millcreek. Dave had a wonderfully kind and caring way about everything he did, and he took a young guy trying to run the building and shared both his wisdom and kindness with him. My sincere condolences.

Mr. Stillings was my guidance counselor and literally gave me the start to my life today. Due to financial reasons, my parents could not afford college, but when I told him, he began pulling out forms and helped me get financial aid. He then put my name in to get a special PTA scholarship to pay for books. That was 1975, and after pursuing my bachelors, I worked in the criminal justice field for almost 14 years. I then received my master's and eventually my Ph.D. and today I am a professor of criminal justice. I have told this story to my students as they prepare to work with deviant populations. One person can positively influence another person's life forever. Thank you Mr. Stillings for influencing mine. God bless you--you will always be my guardian angel.

David was in my brothers class at SHS and I was a year ahead of him. I was also at Kent State when he was there. So grateful that he was at McDowell for my son Tim, and daughters Robin and Holly. Great guy.

This is the man who told me about how to apply for college and financial aid, which I needed. I ended up going to Case Western for both college and medical school. Now I am a researcher in the biotech industry and have gotten drugs approved for treatment of cardiovascular disease. None of this would have happened without his advice.
