Doris Chambers Obituary

Church Mother

Mrs. Doris D. Chambers, was born Doris Pegues on September 15th, 1934 and went to her heavenly home on May 19th, 2021. She was born in Cheraw, S.C. to Daniel Pegues and Elizabeth Malloy Pegues.

Her career included working in the areas of health care and elementary education, but her most treasured work was working in the church. She was the co-founder of Miracle Temple Church (formerly Church of God in Christ - COGIC) in 1974 along with her husband the late Elder Richard Chambers.

Doris Chambers was known to most as Mother Chambers or Aunt Doris because of her compassionate spirit. She especially had a heart for children and always made certain every child she met knew they were loved.

She began her work in the ministry at Mt. Zion COGIC in Farrell, Pa., where she was mentored by the late Bishop Odis Alexander and First lady Virginia Alexander. She loved to praise God and sing gospel music. She trained many young people with voice coaching and composing music for praise. After 15 years of service there, she and her husband relocated to Erie. She traveled with several gospel groups including the AlexanderAires and the Chambers Family Singers.

She served as First Lady of Miracle Temple faithfully beside her husband until he went to be with the Lord in July 2011. She became an official Church Mother appointed by the Erie District COGIC in 1986 and served as District Mothers' Board Chairperson for many years. Her most recent work was with Home and Foreign Missions.

She was preceded in death by both parents, her husband of 57 years Elder Richard Chambers, a brother Daniel Jr Pegues, and a sister Glenda Pegues.

She leaves to cherish her memory, six children: Four daughters, Tawanna Guin (James) of Cleveland, Ohio, Vaughnette Chambers of Manassas, Va,, Marcella Janick and Beverly Thomas, both of Erie, two sons; Michael Chambers of Buffalo, N.Y., and Darrell Chambers of Erie.

She also leaves eight siblings: two sisters Michele Sparrow and Clara McClain, and six brothers; Tommie Pegues, Blaine Pegues, Wesley Pegues, Sterling Pegues, Otis Pegues, and Dannie Pegues.

She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, relatives, Godchildren, friends, a loving church family, and her son in the Gospel Elder Bobby McClellan (her Pastor).

Friends are invited to call on the family, Saturday, June 5, 2021 at Morning Star Baptist Church, 327 E. 23rd St., Erie, PA 16503, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Burton Quinn Scott Cremation & Funeral Service Inc. Downtown, 602 W. 10th Street, Erie.
