Erin Elizabeth McCarty, 38, of Erie, was born on February 12, 1981, at Hamot, and concluded her three-year battle with ovarian cancer on October 22, 2019. She was at home, with her devoted father Ron McCarty by her side.

After graduating from Mercyhurst Prep in 1999, Erin studied creative writing at Penn State Behrend, and eventually went on to work as a freelance writer for the Erie Times-News. She became a vital voice for the local arts community, penning insightful reviews of every theatrical production she could attend and forming lasting bonds with cast and crew alike. Erin's cheerful optimism, humble creativity, and unselfconscious silliness were unmistakable, and were felt far beyond Erie by friends and pen-pals all over the world. It was through one of these friends that she ultimately met and fell in love with William Levesque. He and Erin married on May 31, 2014 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, where Erin was an active, lifelong member. She expressed her faith daily through the unconditional neighborly love she lavished on every person she met, making those from all walks of life feel welcomed and celebrated.

Erin was preceded in death by her husband William Levesque, her mother Corinne McCarty, her grandparents George and Martha McCarty, and her best friend Beth McCoy Priest.

She is survived by her father Ron McCarty, brother Lt. Commander Benjamin McCarty and his wife Zahira Aragon, brother Nathan McCarty and his wife Jo Daloisio, grandparents Rev. Marshall and Lois Gante, many more extended family, and countless treasured friends who played an important role in her life.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Erin's life during visitation hours at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Road, Erie, PA 16504, on Friday, October 25th from 4-7 p.m. Additionally, a memorial service will be held the following morning at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 643 W. 17th St., Erie, PA 16502, at 11 a.m.

Dear Ron McCarty: I just found out about Erin losing her battle with that dreadful disease. I want you to know that your daughter, Erin left behind many beautiful memories. She was a friend to many many people and always brought smiles and love to everyone. I met Erin on Epinions many years ago. Bilbopooh was a person I could count on and reading her reviews gave me the nerve to trust Epinions in order for me to jump in and join the fun and do what I always loved to do: WRITE. After Epinions folded in 2014, we became friends on facebook then via email then snail mail. She always sent me something funny and never a Christmas season went by where hers and Will's wouldn't be the first card I received. She never downed anyone or said an unkind word. She wouldn't down anyone else's beliefs for she knew everyone is different. Ron,you and your wife raised a beautiful kind caring girl. I and my family want you to know that Erin's "love of life" will live on in our hearts forever. Always lifting up prayers for you as Erin is ALWAYS SMILING DOWN along with her Mom and her husband's telling us that we all live our lives the best way we can and always wear a smile for you never know who you will cheer up today. Our prayers of comfort always there with you Ron. It is an honor for me to have known "Bilbopooh" Erin McCarty.

My heart is heavy, and I don't know quite what to say. I went to high school with Erin and just learned this morning of her passing, I did not even know she had been battling cancer. I will always remember her on our senior trip to Cedar Point, she didn't want to ride any of the big rides but stayed in line with us just to hang out. Erin, you are gone too soon, I am so very saddened with this news. Sending prayers and love to your family during this impossibly difficult time, I pray for healing and comfort.

I am saddened to hear about the loss of Erin, and I want to reach out to her family and friends. She was extremely well respected and loved on Epinions, and a whole lot of fun too. There are so many that sadly don't view our existence with optimism, but Erin always did, and I can't count the number of smiles she created.

She also brought up some good tears of grieving well. In 2009 my 5 year old died of a seizure. Erin actually wrote a song dedicated to him on YouTube. Absolutely beautiful example of love in a time of profound grief. To Erins family she was an angel on earth and you're all in my heart.

I met Erin through an online community of fans of a children's book series. Although we never met in person we exchanged Christmas cards and I followed her Facebook posts. She was a beautiful caring soul who spread joy and love to all, and she will be missed.

I never met Erin in person; we both used to write reviews and Writer's Corner pieces at Epinions, a now-closed review site till it was shuttered in 2014. Still, we kept in touch on Facebook for many years until her untimely passing.

Erin was a sweet, gentle woman of faith. She loved her family, her friends, and everyone else. Above all else, she loved God, and her faith kept her strong even as she faced losses that would have broken many other people. She never gave up, never lost hope, and never complained.

So long, "bilbopooh." You will be missed by all of us who knew you.

I only knew Erin through and Facebook, but she still managed to touch my life with her upbeat personality and unfailing love for her fellow man. May God give all of her friends and loved ones peace and comfort during this time of mourning. She really was a very special and rare person whose incredibly indomitable spirit burned brightly during her too brief lifetime. I have visions of her returning to the loving arms of her husband, mother, and best friend in Heaven.
