A Remarkable Woman

Helen (Engel) Stanko, age 98, of Erie, died quietly and peacefully, on Tuesday, March 7, 2017, at Walnut Creek Healthcare. She was born in Erie, on October 18, 1918, a daughter of the late Fred and Marie (Guerrein) Engel.

She graduated from Strong Vincent High School in 1936. She then started working and continued to do so throughout her life. Her favorite jobs were working at the Kahkwa Club and Holiday Inn South as a hostess. She met many lifelong friends there. She was the ultimate example of a people person. Everybody that met her liked her. Her smile and wit endeared her to all.

She met and then married William F. Stanko on January 27, 1940. They were married for 51 years until he died on November 20, 1991.

She is survived by her son Alan W. Stanko and many nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her two brothers Fred H. and William H. Engel, two brothers-in-law Eugene and John Stanko and four sisters-in-law Betty Engel, Kay Engel, Dorothy Stanko and Marie Stanko.

She loved her cocker spaniels all her life, especially her last one Domino, who slept in her bed.

Friends are invited to call on Friday from 6 until 9 p.m. at the Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street. Additional calling will be held on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of a funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. George Church, 5145 Peach Street. Burial is in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
