Robert Browning Obituary

Robert "Bob" G. Browning, 75, of Fairview Township, passed away on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at The Village at Luther Square. He was born in Gibsonia, Pa., on September 30, 1941, a son of the late, Byron and Hilda O'Neil Browning.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Nick and Nancy Nickolazas; sister-in-law, Nicky Necastro; and dear friend, Terry Ruoff.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Nickolazas Browning; their daughter, Nancy Sen and her husband Shourin; one grandson, Logan Sen and his dog, Nicky.

Bob was raised in the Emsworth area of Pittsburgh. After graduating high school, he worked at Elwin G. Smith steel mill for a handful of years before realizing that he wanted a different life for himself. He put himself through Edinboro College by working long hours each summer at the mill. When he graduated, his manager asked, "What job do you want?" He said, "None, thanks!" and walked out to begin his career - his calling - in teaching. Bob excelled during his 35-year career as a teacher. Of all the subjects he taught, Bob most enjoyed teaching fifth grade science. Each year his students fundraised for the materials to build model rockets, and after learning in class about the science of how rockets work, at the end of the year the students would get to launch their rockets. Bob's own bright curiosity about science, the world and how things work inspired a love of learning in hundreds of students over the years. He continued to receive sweet, grateful letters from former students well into retirement. He taught the latter 20 years of his career from a wheelchair, following an accident in 1980 that left him a paraplegic. While helping to cut branches from a tree, he fell ten feet from a ladder and severed his spinal cord. The accident happened while his beloved wife Betty was pregnant, and so he welcomed his baby daughter Nancy into the world from his wheelchair. He went back to work as soon as he was able, and Betty stayed home to focus on raising their child. He never indulged in even a moment of self-pity; his bravery in the face of his challenges was not ostentatious, loud or self-conscious; it was quiet, steady, unrelenting - and always accompanied by a smile and a silly joke. When he wasn't teaching or spending time with his family, Bob could be found at Walnut Creek Access, the Public Dock or the Peninsula, reeling in steelhead with the best of them. He often went alone or with friends, and sometimes even took neighborhood kids along with him (although his daughter wore out her welcome after she played with all the worms until they died). One particularly impressive catch earned him a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Angler Award for Trophy Fishing. He was also active in local politics, volunteering on many campaigns throughout his life. For several years, he served as committeeperson for the Second District of Fairview, and recently won a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Erie County Democratic Party. During his teaching career, he proudly served as president of the Northwestern Education Association teachers union.

The roles in which Bob was most beloved were husband and father. He married Betty Nickolazas Browning on May 10, 1969, and for 48 years they were not only devoted spouses, but also best friends. Their lifelong love was deep and real; it made bearable their tragedies, multiplied their joy, and filled their lives with laughter. Bob and Betty were a team in every sense, forever making sacrifices to provide the best possible education and opportunities for their daughter, Nancy. Bob never missed an opportunity to tell his daughter that he loved her and that he was proud of her; he took the time to teach her how to play softball, how to parallel park, how to change the oil, and how to hold a conversation. She will forever be grateful for the many lessons he imparted to her, the most valuable ones through his own example.

He was deeply loved, and he will be forever missed.

Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd., on Monday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the Memorial Service at 6:00 p.m. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Several years have now come and gone since Bob's passing. You move on but fortunately God blesses us with lessons learned, wisdom received, and continuing memories. My children will be graduating from college this spring. Recently my wife and I were talking about our school years, the differences between then and now. It's a tougher time to grow up in many ways and certainly a more difficult environment to teach in. Probably one of the highest honors for any individual is to say they made a difference. He did then and continues to do so now. Blessings.

Betty & Nancy,

I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. Browning was such a wonderful person and excellent teacher. I had him in his first year of teaching at Northwestern and my youngest daughter Brittany had him in his last year of teaching. He called us his "Bookends". May you rest in peace Mr. B.

Betty and Nancy: Bob, while working in a steel mill, was taking college prep courses, and was inspired by an instructor named Mr. Leone who suggested that he go to Edinboro,to become a teacher, and that was the reason he went out of his way to meet me, in hopes the Instructor and I were related. We were not, but our friendship grew over the fact we both owned and rode Bultaco Matador motorcycles. A few years ago while we were having breakfast at a restaurant, I mentioned how few teachers receive a Golden Apple Award, and I wished I had one. And Bob replied, I do not have one, I have Five! Bob was my best teacher as he taught me humor and how to laugh. Nobody can use the English language as well as Bob to bring humor and delight to any conversation he was having with his friends, who dearly loved him. You have my sincere condolences.

Dear Betty and Nan,

Please accept sincere condolences at Bob's passing. I have not lived in the area in many years. My children are now finishing their first year in college and they and many others over the years have heard the stories of making gun powder and rockets in science class, of the 5th grade teachers who were the best all time quarterbacks for football at recess and of the only teacher who had to paddle me in school. He and I made a pact that it was just between us. Years later at my wedding reception Bob came thru the receiving line in his wheel chair. I leaned over and he whispered "I never said a word". I replied, "I know, I wouldn't be standing here if you had."

Like so many people have written here, my life was impacted by Bob and all of the teachers that helped me along the way in life. He made a difference. May he be at peace.

Dear Betty and Nan,
I am so very sorry about Bob's passing. He certainly has left a void and will be missed by many. It was 21 years ago when we moved in across the street. My three kids had not yet made friends with any neighborhood kids (actually there were not many at that time), but they sure found a friend in Bob! When they came home from school they often went straight to the Browning's where I would find them all setting on the grass around "Mr. B" and listening to his stories. As if he would not have had enough of teaching throughout his day, he made time to interact with 3 kids who will miss him dearly! Even my grandkids were very saddened to hear of Bob's passing. Bob's positive spirit was so very admirable. I never heard him complain about his circumstance and he moved through life as though there were few limitations. Bob was an absolute joy, he had an incredible sense of wit and charm. The fun fishing excursions that Scotty had with "Big Fish Mon" will forever be a wonderful memory.
Our sincere Condolences

Mr. Browning was my 5th grade teacher and taught science while using hands-on activities. I remember the rockets, volcanoes, and styrofoam planets! He was a teacher that made learning fun and he always had a smile. I'm currently an elementary school teacher in Colorado. Thank you for inspiring me, Mr. Browning!!
Sending prayers to Mrs. Browning and Nancy.

Dear Betty, Nancy and Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Bob was a great teacher and wonderful person. I so enjoyed teaching right next door to Bob at Springfield Elementary. Lots of great memories! He always invited me and my kindergarten students to come out and watch his fifth graders shoot off their rockets. How exciting! He always knew when I was coming down the hall. He said that he knew it was me, just by hearing the fast clip clop of my feet! I would help him out to his car after school, and whenever he was leaving he would say, "Hey Lisa, take the rest of the day off!" He was always very positive and always made you smile!
It meant a lot to me to have Bob and you, Betty, come to my Retirement dinner. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you and all of the family. May the Lord give you strength and His peace.
Love, Lisa and Gary Daugherty

I remember Bob fondly from our years of working together in the NWEA. He was always a teacher who went the extra mile for his students. I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers.

March 12, 2017

Betty and Family,

I did not know Bob or you well as he was not at the Village at Luther Square for long, but you both touched my heart in a way that I will never forget. I wish peace and comfort to you and your family in the days to come.

In my short 12 years of nursing, I have not come across many people like you and Bob, the type of people who just make you remember why you get into the profession to begin with. Thank you for being those people for me! I will forever remember Bob and you, Betty!

I was one of Bob Brrowning's 5th graders - I give him full credit in opening my eyes to the world around me. I remember him giving me access to a very nice diopter microscope during recess and encouraging me to look at anything and everything - pond water, the cells in a flower pedal, the stuff under your toenails, etc. I also remember his encouragement to bring in the lungs of a deer that my father had taken that year. He jumped on the opportunity to explain how our lungs work and to show us lungs inflating by blowing into them with a tube. My father was in printing and would bring us excess large poster sized paper - Bob let us design giant paper airplanes and fly them out the 3rd story windows to demonstrate aerodynamics. And who could ever forget him showing how a particular acid reaction gave off hydrogen ...and then inflating a balloon with said hydrogen, tying it off with piece of rocket fuse ...and then lighting it and tossing it into Terry Ruoff's room next door. Boom! Bob did what only great teachers can do - he ignited young minds and made lifetime impacts. -Ryan Pazun 1977 student

Betty and family, What a joy to have known Bob as my daughters' teacher (LeeAnn and Lori Myers) and outstanding community member. '85 the year of Albion's tornado, Bob was one of the first to set up communications for our area. He was so loving, dedicated, and a real activist for all the right causes! May many good memories light your way as you miss him. God was his pilot and he shared this with so many lives. Sandy (Myers) Saliga
