Samuel Joseph Artise

1939 - 2018

Samuel Joseph Artise, 79, surrounded by his family, passed peacefully on to his Heavenly Home, on Tuesday, October 2, 2018.

He will be fondly remembered by his family and friends, since he always put them first above his own needs.

Sam was born in Dunkirk, N.Y., on August 17, 1939, to Pascal "Pat" and Anna Infantino Artise, both of whom have preceded him in death, along with his six siblings, Frank, Russell (Marie), Pascal "Pat," George, Nancy Grzelak and Anna Marie Haines. Sam was the last of his family to pass.

Sam is survived by his wife of 57 years, Victoria (Soder) Artise; his son, Steve and wife, Janet; two daughters, Shelly Harris and husband, Dan, and Victoria Crays and husband, Mark. Sam enjoyed his six grandchildren, Nicholas, Lauren and Kayleigh Artise, Hilary and Noah Samuel Marvin, and Peyton Samuel Crays; and two great-grandchildren, Hilary's sons, Bennett and Jeremiah. He is further survived by two sisters-in-law, Betty and Becky Artise; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sam was a veteran in the USAF. After serving his country, he worked at General Electric Transportation for 34 years, where he led his teams in both disciplines of locomotives and rail transit cars, retiring in 1992. Throughout his retirement, Sam helped with the Erie Golden Blades / Erie Panthers Hockey teams. He enjoyed bowling with his brother Pat, golfing with his brother Frank, playing bingo with family and friends at the East Erie Moose and attending monthly luncheons with his cousins. Sam was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins and Pirates. He also loved watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports, along with attending school and scouting events. He was a member of St James R.C. Church and the East Erie Moose.

Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., 2607 Buffalo Rd., on Friday, from 4 p.m. until the time of the Prayer Service there at 7 p.m. Further visitation will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 10 a.m. and are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at St. James R.C. Church at 11 a.m. A private interment will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sam's name to the Community Nursing Service of North East, 7 Park St., North East, PA 16428, or to a charity of your choice.
