Thomas Hughes Obituary

Thomas P. Hughes Thomas P. Hughes, 80, of Erie, died Thursday, June 21, 2007, at Hamot Medical Center. He was born July 10, 1926, in Erie, a son of the late Thomas “Tim” and Margaret Wingerter Hughes. He attended Cathedral Preparatory School through his junior year, and was drafted into the U.S. Army in his senior year. He served with the 84th Infantry Division, 333rd Regiment, in the European Theater of World War II. He worked as a photo engraver at Erie Engraving for 45 years, and also was a self-employed caterer for many years. Mr. Hughes was knighted by Erie Catholic Bishop Michael Murphy as a Knight of St. Patrick in 1990. He was a member of Mount Calvary Church, serving on numerous committees and also as a lector and usher. He also was active at St. Patrick Church, acting as an acolyte at funeral Masses and as a committee member for the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. He was also active in the Cursillo, having served as a rector. For many years, he was active in the Erie Diocese Retreat League, with retreats at St. Mark Seminary in Erie as well as St. Bonaventure University in St. Bonaventure, N.Y. He was a past president of the South Shore Home Owner’s Association, and was an officer of the Federation of Social Clubs. He was a member of the American Legion and the Siebenbuerger Club, and was a life member of the East Erie Turners and the Erie Maennerchor. An infant daughter, Mary Margaret Hughes, and a sister, Mary Margaret Wolfe, preceded him in death. He was further preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Richard “Whitey” Wolfe and Dan Kelleher; a sister-in-law, Joan Kubeja; and his mother-in-law, Mary Kubeja. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Jean Kubeja Hughes; a son, Tim Hughes and his wife Mary Ann, of Midlothian, Va.; a daughter, Tricia Howard and her husband Pat, of Erie; five grandchildren, Thomas, Rebecca, Susan, Colleen and Christine Hughes; a brother, Jerry Hughes and his wife Maureen, of Erie; a sister, Patricia Kelleher, of Erie; a brother-in-law, Bob Kubeja, of Erie; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call at the A. Brugger & Sons Funeral Home, LLP, 845 E. 38th St., Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and may attend services there Monday at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at Mount Calvary Church. Jean and Family -- Cathy and I are deeply saddened upon the news we heard after returning to Erie last Saturday from a weeklong trip.
