Dorothy Tevis Obituary
Dorothy Berry "Dottie" Tevis, 91, died Friday, February 10, 2006, at her residence. She was the wife of Stanley Hart Tevis, Jr. whom she married October 24, 1942, and who predeceased her in 1974. Born March 1, 1914, in Baltimore, Md., she was the daughter of the late Charles Kinley and Marguerite Anna Kurtz Berry. Mrs. Tevis was a graduate of Western High School, class of 1931, and a 1935 graduate of Western Maryland College. She also did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin and Johns Hopkins University. She taught Home Economics in the Baltimore City School System and also taught at South Carroll in the late 1960's and 70's. She had been a librarian at the House of Good Sheppard School. After her husband's death in 1974, she became chairwoman of S. H, Tevis and Son, Inc. Mrs. Tevis was a member of the League of Women Voters, the Westminster Garden Club, Past President of the Westminster Women's Club, member of the Carroll County Historical Society, the co-founder of the Mistletoe Mart, member of the Thursday Women's Club, and a member of the Ascension Episcopal Church where she had served on the altar guild. Mrs. Tevis was also a great supporter of the Westminster Arts Council. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Stanley "Jack" Tevis, III and Beth Tevis of Westminster, Md.; daughter, Margaret Louise "Peggy" Tevis of Arlington, Va.; grandchildren, Victoria Erin "Tory" Tevis, Andrew Hart "Dru" Tevis, and Katerine Noel "Kate" Tevis; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Albert Ernst of Baltimore, Md.; and nephews and wives, Robert and Connie Ernst of Baltimore, Md., and Michael and Sally Ernst of Pasadena, Md. She was predeceased by daughter, Charlotte Anne "Singy" Tevis; and by brother, Charles Kinley Berry. Funeral services will be held at the Ascension Episcopal Church, 23 N. Court St., Westminster, Md., on Friday, February 17, 2006, at 3 p.m. with her pastor, the Rev. Ron Fisher, officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. at Westminster Cemetery prior to the services. The family will receive friends at the Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster, Md., on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Carroll County Arts Council, 91 W. Main St., Westminster, MD 21157.
