George Franklin "Bud" Petry Jr.
NEW WINDSOR, MD George Franklin 'Bud' Petry Jr., 81, died Monday, March 17, 2008, at Carroll Hospital Center. He was the husband of Carolyn M. Petry, his wife of 50 years. Born October 25, 1926, in New Windsor, he was the son of the late George F. Sr. and Marie Haines Petry. Mr. Petry served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1947, during World War II, seeing action in the Pacific Theater. Prior to entering the service, he delivered ice and newspapers and worked on local farms. After returning home from the war, he was a milk truck driver for 40 years, retiring in 1999, and then worked at Babylon Vault Company, New Windsor. Bud was an active charter member of the New Windsor Volunteer Fire Company for 60 years, serving in numerous capacities from nozzleman through line officer, including president for 16 years and chief for four years. He was also a member of VFW Post 8806, Union Bridge, and Hesson-Snider American Legion Post, Taneytown. He was of the Methodist faith. He enjoyed blue grass music, camping, and spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Bill Christoffersen of Edmonds, Wash., Linda C. and Gene Grabill of Hanover, and Susan L. Wetzel of Union Bridge, Md.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry L. and Vicki Petry of New Windsor, Md., and Buddy and Marisa Petry of Hanover; 13 grandchildren, Dale A. and Scott Lowman, Jennifer Clinton, Chad, Kyle, and Seth Petry, Amanda Groft, Phillip Duerr, Keirsten and R.J. Wetzel, Colton B. and Madison Petry, and Adam Christoffersen; eight greatgrandchildren, Abigail Lowman, Michael Lowman, Griffin, Marshall and Davis Lowman, Morgan R. Wagner, and Leigha and Colby Petry; sister, Mary Darr of Bonneauville; a brother, Harold Petry of New Windsor; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kaylinn Petry in 2002. A fire department funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in the Apparatus Bay of the New Windsor Volunteer Fire Dept, with the Rev. Tim Webster, pastor of Uniontown Bible Church, officiating. Interment will be in Winters Cemetery, New Windsor. The family will receive friends at the New Windsor Volunteer Fire Dept. Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Friday from 10 a.m. until service time. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Windsor Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 247, New Windsor, MD 21776.
