John Wolford Obituary

John Alton "Dyke" Wolford passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, at the Lutheran Home in York, after a brief illness. Born in Hunterstown on Feb. 11, 1912, Mr. Wolford was the great-grandson of Jesse Wolford, a veteran of the Civil War, and was the son of the late John Wolford and Annie Laura Weigle. He graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1929. Mr. Wolford was married in 1936 to the former Martha Minter, who preceded him in death in 1999. He worked for many years as a flour miller at D.H. Sharrer and Sons, and at York Roller Mills, and as a foreman at York County Gas Company; he enjoyed a post-retirement life as a gardener and volunteer, and as chief cheerleader and production assistant to his wife's award-winning quilting career. He leaves behind a daughter, Joyce Moran and her husband, Bayard; a son, Larry Wolford and his wife, Cindy; four grandchildren: Ed Moran (and his wife, Rachel), Christine McCarthy (and her husband, Bruce), Jesse and Jeremy Wolford; and three great-grandchildren – Amanda and Devon McCarthy and Sylvie Moran. He also leaves behind many friends, colleagues and grateful beneficiaries of his volunteer help and his companionship. He will be missed. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Feiser Funeral Home, Inc., 302 Lincolnway West, New Oxford, with his Pastor, the Rev. Larry R. Bergh officiating. A viewing will be held at the funeral home Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Interment will follow at The Pines Lutheran Church Cemetery in New Chester, with a reception to follow at the church. Mr. Wolford was a longtime member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Contributions may be made in his memory to St. Peter's at 947 N. George St., York, PA 17404.

Robert Shaffer

March 6, 2005

When my late father was first in the Ministry, John and his wife were members of the Young Peoples Group at one of the churches in the East Berlin charge. John told me that he was one of the young members who delivered the cradle to my parents when I was born. Working with John at the old York County Gas Company, we would question, "Did I rock the cradle?" My sympathy for your loss. Sincerely, Robert K. Shaffer
