Joseph Myers Obituary

Joseph W. Myers, 83, of Hanover, entered into God's eternal care Friday afternoon, Aug. 20, 2004, at the Hanover Hospital. Born Aug. 9, 1921, in Spring Grove, he was the son of the late Harry E. and Lillie R. (Spangler) Myers. Joseph was the loving husband of Marie R. (Wilson) Myers, with whom he would have celebrated 63 years of marriage on Sept. 20, 2004. Mr. Myers was a member of St. David's United Church of Christ in Hanover, as well as a life member of the Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Company. Joseph graduated from the Hoffacker's one-room school house in West Manheim Township. He was a farmer all of his life, as well as a carpenter for Burnell J. Moul and J.F. Rohrbaugh, where he retired from in 1981. Mr. Myers was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II with the 398th Infantry Division. He was awarded European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, as well as the Good Conduct Medal. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, listening to bluegrass music, playing cards and spending time with his family and friends. In addition to his wife, Joseph is survived by 10 children; William E. Myers of Glenville, David L. Myers of Spring Grove, Judy M. Leese and Julia M. Null, both of New Oxford, Earl J. Myers, Glenn E. Myers and Gloria Jean Werner, all of Hanover, Ned A. Myers of Glenville, Raymond H. Myers and Joan E. Barbour, both of Hanover; 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Florence Smith of Jefferson. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Jason A. Myers, and two brothers, Raymond H. Myers, who died in World War II, and George E. Myers, who died Dec. 8, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, at St. David's United Church of Christ, 142 Hobart Road, Hanover, with his pastor, the Rev. Scott A. Sager, officiating. Burial will be in St. David's Church Cemetery in Hanover. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23, at the Kenworthy Funeral Home Inc., 269 Frederick St., Hanover, as well as from 9 to 10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 24, at the church. The Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard will provide full military honors. Serving as casketbearers will be Joseph's grandsons: Richard Myers, Steven Myers, Keith Null, Greg Leese, Daniel Myers, Scott Myers, Kevin Null, Wesley Myers, Carl Myers, Allan Myers, Jeremy Myers and Jake Barbour. If you wish to make memorial contributions in Joseph's name, the family suggests they be made to St. David's United Church of Christ, 142 Hobart Road, Hanover, PA 17331.

I have many memories of Grandpa, and they are all good. The only time i can remember him mad is when we would sneak into the barn again, and play in the hayloft. He was the chief of the Myers clan, and will be missed. Its wonderful to see all the families that are in place now because of him. He will not be forgotten.
