Richard Neiderer Obituary

HANOVER Richard J. Neiderer, 86, died Friday, January 7, 2011, at Homewood at Plum Creek. He was called by God to his eternal home where his beloved wife of almost 60 years, Mary Mildred "Millie" (Smith) Neiderer, is waiting for him. Millie died August 30, 2003. Mr. Neiderer was born May 17, 1924, in Adams County, to Paul C. and Blanche M. (McKim) Neiderer. Rich and his wife owned and operated Neiderer's Swimming Pool and Banquet Room/Catering Service in McSherrystown from 1967 until 1989. Rich was a WWII Veteran serving in the 1st Army, 3rd Armor Division, Operation Spearhead. He was very proud of his service to his country. He fought in Normandy, Belgium, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was wounded in Cologne, Germany, on March 6, 1945. Later his brother, Whitey, found him at a Paris Hospital. He received a Purple Heart medal and an honorable discharge. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hanover. He was also an active (chartered) member of the Conewago Lions Club. Later, during his retirement years, he was very active in the Hanover Lions Club as well as the Hanover Mall Walkers with his wife. In earlier years after the War, Rich was a charter member of the Bonneauville Borough, Fire Company and Catholic War Veterans. Rich was also a member of the McSherrystown Knights of Columbus and the McSherrystown Home Association. Mr. Neiderer is survived by one son, Gerald E. Neiderer and wife, Mary of Glenville; two daughters, Janet Keffer and husband, Jack of Hanover, and Susan Wagner and husband, Lawrence of Gettysburg; four grandchildren, Cindy Coleman, Larry Neiderer, Jason Neiderer, and Neal Wagner; four stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nine step great-grandchildren; and recently three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by all of his siblings, one sister, Mildred E. Adams, and five brothers, Albert, Robert, Francis, Rodney, and Donald Neiderer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5125 Grandview Road, Hanover, on Monday, January 10, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Timothy Marco presiding. Burial will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. Friends and relatives will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home, 501 Ridge Ave., McSherrystown, with prayers at 8 PM. Serving as pallbearers will be Larry Neiderer, Jason Neiderer, Neal Wagner, Charles Coleman, Josh Coleman, and Devin Waggoner. In lieu of flowers, contributions in honor of Rich may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5125 Grandview Road, Hanover, PA 17331; or VNA Hospice, 440 N. Madison St., Hanover, PA 17331. I foundly remember Rich every summer at the pool. Living across the street from the pool Rich gave me my first job. A lot of found memories and friends were generated because of this man. Rest in peace.

Uncle Rich was a wonderful person and we will really miss him. He used to come up and go to Cracker Barrel or Texas Roadhouse and always seemed to enjoy himself. He was always so thoughtful. We are sorry for you loss he was a great person!
