Arnold Kaplan Obituary

KAPLAN, ARNOLD
Arnold Kaplan, age 99 of Scottsdale, AZ., passed away on Thursday August 29, 2013. Arnold was born in Malden, MA., and was a graduate of Boston Latin School, and from the University of Maine, where he was president of his fraternity (Tau Epsilon Phi) and a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. Arnold moved to Bridgeport, CT where he married Bobby Rapoport on July 7, 1940. They have been married for 73 years. They raised their two daughters, Susan and Ellen, in a loving household. Arnold was very proud of his career in the insurance business, and was active in local and state associations. He was a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Certified Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU). At age 80 Arnold received a Masters Degree in Financial Services from American University in Bryn Mawr, PA. His interest in finance and investment stayed with him throughout the years. A leader in the Bridgeport Jewish community, Arnold was Treasurer of the Bridgeport (CT) JCC during the construction of the "new JCC" at its Park Avenue location. Arnold chaired the Jewish Federation Annual Campaign during the 1973 War in Israel. He is an active member of Congregation B'nai Israel, where he served on the board for many years and was president for two. He was a regular participant in the Saturday morning 8 a.m. service, enjoying the prayers and songs and breakfast that followed. He also belonged to Temple Israel in West Palm Beach, FL. Along with his wife Bobby, Arnold enjoyed travelling. Some of the places they visited together included China, India, Turkey, Greece, as well as wonderful tours of this country, especially enjoying the National Parks. Arnold and Bobby were members of Rolling Hills Country Club in Wilton, CT and of The Fountains in Florida. They were regular subscribers at the Kravis Center in W. Palm Beach, and enjoyed attending performances there each winter. Arnold was a voracious reader, enjoying both fiction and nonfiction. He was very interested in politics and he was a real liberal! He was actively involved in the issues of the environment, population control, women in politics, women's reproductive rights and health issues. Arnold played tennis up to the age of 90 and continued his three-mile walks on the days he didn't have a doubles game lined up. Arnold was very proud of teaching Mature Drivers classes for AARP up to age 95. His students always enjoyed his classes, especially the jokes he told about getting older. He was an arbitrator for SIPC (later FINRA), and shared his wisdom and judgment with others. Arnold loved his family. He and Bobby started with just two daughters, Susan Bauchner of Warren, VT., Ellen and Allan Gittleman of E. Greenwich, RI and Scottsdale, AZ., who gave them four grandchildren and now, nine great grandchildren. He loved to be with them, and they always enjoyed being with Arnold. Arnold is also survived by his Brother George Kaplan (and Shirley) of Brookline, MA. He had a sweet nature and a gently way. Arnold and Bobby lived in Southport, CT and in Palm Beach, FL for over 30 years. In 2010 they moved to Scottsdale AZ to live in an Assisted Living community near family. Services will take place on Tuesday September 3, 2013 at 11:00 AM from Congregation B'nai Israel 2710 Park Avenue in Bridgeport, with interment following at B'nai Israel Cemetery in Fairfield. Donations in his memory may be made to Congregation B'nai Israel (Bridgeport, CT), Hospice of the Valley www.hov.org (Phoenix, AZ), Planned Parenthood and ACLU. The Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements. (www.greensfuneralhome.com)

Arnold was my mother's (Marcella "Lala" Carver) 1st cousin. She was soooo fond of him...as was I. Arnold was the consummate gentleman and family-man. I know he is missed by family and friends, but a bit of him lives on in all who knew and loved him.

Susan, Ellen, and Bobby,
I was so sorry to hear of Mr. Kaplan's passing. Having met him at age 17 I had the pleasure of working with him and his staff and meeting you all. I'm blessed for that and will always remember him. May god grant you all strength.

Arnold was one of my most favorite people in the world! He was kind, caring, smart, funny and a very fair person- always looking at the positive side of things.....and trying to make this world a better place. Bob joins me in wishing his wonderful memory to be a blessing to all he touched. He knew how to love and give. He will be very missed. With great affection - Meryl and Bob Kessler

Bobby, Ellen, Susan and families;
I was so sorry to hear of Arnold's passing. I have had the pleasure of knowing him for over 45 years. He was my first boss and have remained in contact throughout the years, most recently for his last birthday when he acknowledged my card with a recent photo of him & Bobby. May his memory be eternal!

Written on January 27th, 2013:

Dear Arnold,

I have to admit that writing a letter to someone nearing the end of their life is a first for me but it is something I feel compelled to do. I simply want you to know that I love you very much. I have so much to thank you for and to be grateful for. It is a privilege to even have a grandfather well into my adulthood. Many of my friends lost their grandparents long ago, as children. It means the world to me that I got to know you as I became an adult and that you know my children and they know and love you, too.

As a family patriarch you modeled for my parents how to be kind, loving, generous, and fun and they in turn passed those qualities down to me and I hope that Steve and I are honoring that legacy and doing the same for our girls.

I will always remember and share with the girls how much you value learning and that you continued to have an open mind and expand your knowledge throughout your life. Not only did you continue your own learning journey but you also gave back by sharing what you learned with others. You gave your time, knowledge, and money selflessly to help others. I can only hope to pass that love of learning and generosity along to future generations of Kaplan / Gittleman / Stewarts.

I will always remember your witty sense of humor and how important it is to maintain a sense of humor even in difficult times. Perhaps most of all I am so very lucky to have witnessed your long and loving marriage and friendship to Bobby. It has been a beautiful, consistent presence in my life that I will always remember. I love how the two of you adore and respect one another. I also admire how you shared common interests with each other like traveling the world, playing golf and tennis, and being with friends and family.

Arnold, if I can be half the person you are and live even a glimpse of the life you've lived, then I will be a very blessed and fortunate person. Thank you for everything you've given me and done for me and my family. We all love you very much and you will always be in our hearts.

Your loving granddaughter,

Danielle (on behalf of Steve, Sydney, Avery, and myself)

Arnold was one of the nicest, most well-rounded and kindest people you would ever want to meet and know. He always had a positive attitude, a youthful spirit, a love for learning and sharing, a terrific sense of humor, and a curiosity which he partially satisfied by reading and traveling. His smile would warm a room and always made you feel special and loved. His love was shared with his wonderful and devoted wife and best friend of 73 years, Bobby, and his terrific children, Ellen and Susan, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They will all carry on his legacy of helping others and being people who have a good heart and an open-mind. Arnold also had a close brother, George, who is equally as nice and devoted to his family and will also miss him very much. I send my love to the family, and they should have peace of mind that they all did everything possible to enhance the quality of Arnold's life, and they should have no regrets. Arnold lived well and will always be in our hearts. With lots of love to the family...cousin Judy
