Robert Hacker Obituary

Robert Glen Hacker
Robert "Bob" Hacker a long-time resident of Fairfield, died peacefully in his sleep on March 19, 2023 to join his wife Betty who predeceased him by six months.
Bob and Betty met as students at Greenwich High School and eventually settled in Fairfield where they raised their family and were residents for over 50 years. Bob graduated from Champlain College and later earned an MBA from the University of Connecticut. He served in the Army Signal Corps and was stationed in Fort Gordon, GA. When his service was complete, he embarked on a career in business that took him and Betty around the country before returning permanently to Connecticut.
He was the Human Resources Manager at Perkin Elmer for years and was a valued mentor to many who started their careers there. He was ahead of his time in many ways, instilling the idea of entrepreneurship in his family and was part of a start-up that developed "The Voice Caster," a speaker phone, which was considered a technological feat at the time.
He lived with great respect and concern for the environment, conserving energy (translation- winter nights in the Hacker Household were dubbed "Bob's Arctic Locker"), cutting the grass with the push mower, and composting kitchen scraps to use in his garden long before it was popular to do so. He also had a life-long love of the shoreline and Long Island Sound and could be found swimming from jetty to jetty between Jennings and Penfield beach, sailing for hours on his yellow and orange sunfish, walking on the reef, fishing and checking his lobster traps.
Ultimately, his life revolved around his family. Bob cherished Betty and he watched over her until her dying day. He loved their life near the beach in Fairfield, playing tennis, riding bikes, spending time at the Beach Club, working in their garden at home and the Beachside Community Garden. There is no question that both Bob and Betty lived their lives to the fullest.
Bob got a great kick out of his grandchildren and the feeling was mutual. Continuing with traditions that he started with his children, he was Helmet Man, the Toe Fish, and he assisted the Easter Bunny with cryptic clues to prized Easter Eggs. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, including Gayle and Sam Sullivan, Dr. Glen Hacker and Cathy Peru, David and Wendy Hacker, and Dr. Robert and Ann Hacker; grandchildren Erin and Daniel Sullivan, Sarah Gilmutdinova and Tommy Hacker, Ray (Shannon) and Alex Peru, Mia Frappier (Jonathan), Kyleigh Bihary (Mike), Kenneth and Kristina Hacker, Dr. Maria, Robby and Steven Hacker; great-grandchildren Skylar, Michael, Violet, William, Flora, Kenna and Dominic and beloved nieces and nephews.
The family would like to acknowledge the dedication and kindness of Bob's caregivers over the past many months, especially Lulu, Dorcia and Teresa, as well as the staff of Visiting Angels and Ridgefield VNA.
A Celebration of the Lives of Bob and Betty Hacker will be held at First Church Congregational, 148 Beach Road, Fairfield, CT at 11:00 a.m. on May 5, 2023. Friends are invited to stay after the service and join the family for a reception in celebration. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Church Congregational to beautify the Memorial Garden which is Bob and Betty's final resting place.

Bob Hacker was a gem. A truly inspirational and very kind man. He was a wonderful father to his children, and a devoted husband to his wife. He was a role model to many people, a loving person, and a beautiful human being. May he rest in peace with Betty. .
