Shirley Gordon Mayhugh
March 20, 1945 - August 18, 2025
Shirley Gordon Mayhugh, loving husband of Constance Gwizdak Mayhugh, and amazing father of Mark Christopher Mayhugh, passed away peacefully, surrounded by close family, on August 18, 2025. He was born in The Plains, Virginia on March 20, 1945, to Pendleton Berkley Mayhugh and Nettie Margaret Holliday Mayhugh. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Herbert (Dick), Joseph (Sonny), John (Phil), and Ronald; sisters, Helen, Betty and Ruby; brothers-in-law, Herman Moore, Howard Hodgson, Joseph Kirby, and John Gwizdak; sisters-in-law Mary Mayhugh and Florence Mayhugh. He is survived by his wife, Connie and their son, Mark (Erin) of Leesburg, brother, Michael, sister-in-law, Catherine Cross; brother-in-law, Anthony Gwizdak; grandchildren, Landon and Piper Mayhugh, and many, many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Shirley had a long career in government contracts starting with Atlantic Research and later with IBM, Loral, and Lockheed Martin. He retired in December of 2002 from Lockheed Martin and returned to work for IBM, where he retired on March 31, 2010.
He and Connie were married in Carrolltown, PA on October 3, 1970. They spent most of their married lives in Fairfax County and moved to Regency in Prince William County in September of 2007.
Especially since his retirement, Shirley and Connie had been avid travelers. Some of their many trips include Alaska, Italy, Scotland, Ireland, Dominican Republic, river cruises on Danube and Rhine, and their most recent cruise through the Panama Canal. One of their most memorable trips was as part of a pilgrimage to Israel and Jordan in January of 2020, where they renewed their wedding vows at Cana in celebration of their 50th anniversary.
Shirley was an avid craftsman and skilled amateur handyman throughout his life and his enthusiasm to lend a hand cemented his long-lasting relationships with his neighbors wherever he went. He was a lover of music, bowling, playing poker, and watching westerns. In his later years, his world revolved around his beautiful grandchildren.
