Lemuel H. Porter

DURHAM - Lemuel Herbert "Herb" "Popo" Porter, of Durham and formerly of Charlotte, died Nov. 2, 2011, in hospice care at the VA Medical Center in Durham. Born in Fayetteville on July 29, 1923, Herb was the son of Lemuel Harrison Porter and Minnie Belle Monroe Porter. He was a 1947 graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill and a lifelong dedicated fan of the university and its basketball and football teams. Herb had many accomplishments during his life, including commanding a LCT at the Normandy Beachhead during the D-Day Invasion. He had been a very successful wholesale clothing salesman, real estate broker and director of a real estate academy. Popo was preceded in death by his children, Pamela Porter Zeisler and Eric Monroe Porter; and his siblings, Ruth Field, Eoline Hewlett, Treva Pendleton and Hazel Lawrence. Popo is survived by his son, Mark Covington Porter of Hickory; grandchildren, Sara Zeisler Yontz of Cary, Paige Porter Inge of Monroe, Brett Porter of Hickory, Brian Porter of Dacula, Ga., and Erin Porter of Asheville; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandson. Popo is also survived by seven nieces and nephews, including Betsy Lawrence Wengert of Cape Coral, Fla. A private burial will be held Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011, in the Martin family cemetery in Liberty, S.C. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any local hospice.
