Lewis D. Moore

ROWLAND - After a heroic battle with Parkinson's disease, Lewis Dixon "Louie" Moore, 84, passed away at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 23, 2013, at his home in Rowland. Lewis is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Doris McRae Moore; his daughter, Mary Ann Masters and her husband, John D. Masters, of Lumberton, and their sons, Harrison and Ross; and his son, Lewis Dixon Moore Jr. of Simpsonville, S.C., and his wife, Kathleen, and their daughters, Meredith and Peyton. Lewis also is survived by his brother, Robert Burl Moore of Harmony and his wife, Carolyn. Lewis, fondly called "Mr. Louie," was blessed to have many treasured nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. Christian love and nurturing were supplied by his family as well as devoted caregivers Tameka Brown, George Baker, Mary Richardson, Amy Locklear, Mary Benjamin and outstanding Southeastern Hospice employees, especially Tracy Hunt, Allison West and Anna Bell. Brownie McLeod, MD. provided wonderful medical care as well as words of spiritual wisdom and solace. Louie was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Dixon and Annie Weisner Moore, as well as his brothers and sisters, Samuel Tomlin Moore, Kenneth Moore, Elizabeth Sue Brawley, Mildred Huff, William Thomas Moore, Harry Adolphus Moore, Olivia Davidson and Peggy Harrington. Born Sept. 23, 1923, in Olin in Iredell County, Louie was reared on his family's farm. He enlisted in World War II in the Coast Guard. He was recalled to the Naval Reserves in the Korean War. After Korea, Lewis graduated from Appalachian State College in 1953. In 1954, he came to Rowland High School as a teacher and coach. After earning a Master of Arts in education administration from East Carolina and performing further post graduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Lewis became principal in Rowland public schools. Lewis married Doris McRae of Rowland on June 24, 1956. They lived a long and happy life surrounded by loving friends and family. Lewis became a manufacturer's representative for Star Engraving in 1965, then later for Balfour, selling caps and gowns, class rings, diplomas and announcements. He was fondly called "the Ring Man" by students throughout North Carolina. He retired in 1990. He was then able to spend many hours playing golf, an appropriate pairing because it was a gentleman's game. He was the moderator of the Liars Club. which met for coffee daily at Stone's Corner Store in Rowland, only the members of which truly know the truth! A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 30, 2013. at Rowland United Methodist Church in Rowland. All are invited to visit with the family following the service.
