Melvin Alexander Obituary

FAYETTEVILLE - Melvin Alexander, 83, of Fayetteville, died peaceably in his home on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011. Born June 6, 1928, in Lafayette, La., he was the eldest of 12 children to Edwin and Lillian Alexander. Shortly after graduation, Melvin Alexander entered the Army, stationed for a time in North Carolina, where he met Thelma Douglas Pough in 1948. They married on Dec. 15, 1950, in Hopkinsville, Ky., while stationed at Fort Campbell. Having served in the military for a number of years, Mr. Alexander was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 6018, the 555 PIA and Cootie. "Alex" grew up in the church and later rededicated his life. Melvin Alexander worked for more than 50 years in the food service industry as a food director. He was a chef by trade, but we came to know cooking was more than that. He inspired all with his remarkable talents. We will always remember his specialty, 'Louisiana gumbo'. a 'Cajun cuisine' that he perfected. Melvin was also an avid news and history buff. He was the "go to man" if one needed clarity relative to current affairs both past and present. He was passionate about his wife and kids. He was not only there to encourage them, but he offered hope, sometimes with just a listening ear. He will be missed by many. He is survived by four brothers and two sisters. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Thelma; children, Melvin, Mark, Gail, Rosalind, Jacquelyn and Lynetta. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandson. A family viewing will take place between the hours of 4 and 5 p.m. today, Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011, where the body has been entrusted to Wiseman Mortuary, 431 Cumberland St. in Fayetteville. The graveside service will take place at noon Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery, 286 Murchinson Road in Spring Lake. Following the interment, the family will receive friends at 1 p.m. at VFW Post 6018, 116 Chance St. in Fayetteville.
