Norman Cockrell Obituary

EASTOVER - Retired Army Staff Sgt. Norman W. Cockrell, 78, of 2228 Baywood Road, was born April 22, 1930, to the late Harvey Cockrell and Ethel Faulkner in Johnston County. He departed this life to be with his heavenly father on Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville. That of a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, soldier and friend would portray a strong characteristic in him. Norman was a man who always put his family first; the needs of his family and those of others always superseded his own. s a veteran of the Korean War, he served his country with more than 22 years of honorable service to a country he truly loved, preceding his retirement to enjoy his family time. Norman served two tours in Germany, during his military career, he also served as an 82nd Airborne soldier while stationed at Fort Bragg. During his military career, he was a ski instructor in New York and Colorado and also did some boxing. Norman also was former inspector with Albert McCauley Moving & Storage of Fayetteville. He also was in the real estate rental business as the owner and operator of Robyn's Rentals. He loved riding horses and being outdoors. Norman also was a former volunteer fireman with Eastover Volunteer Fire Department, and he was an auctioneer. He was an avid golfer. Hunting, fishing and spending quality time with his family brought so much enjoyment in his life. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lynn Cockrell; and a granddaughter, Robyn Cockrell. Surviving him is his loving wife of more than 57 years, Mary H. Cockrell of the home; two sons, N. Michael Cockrell and his wife, Wanda, of Stedman and Phillip Cockrell of Eastover; two sisters Fay Haugh of Eastover and Barbara Diven of Blairsville, Pa.; two brothers, Winifred Cockrell of Kenly and Marshall Cockrell of Smithfield; three grandsons, Jonathan Cockrell, Cody Cockrell and Justin Cockrell; and two great-grandchildren, Jevin Cockrell and Kaedon Loweke. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 this evening, Jan. 21, 2009, at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home in Fayetteville. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, in Rogers and Breece Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Greg Runner and the Rev. Marshall Howell officiating. He will be laid to rest in Lafayette Memorial Park with the rendering of full military honors. The Cockrells have entrusted the services of Rogers and Breece Funeral Home of Fayetteville.
