Philip Jones Obituary

Philip Wesley Jones, 69, of Fernandina Beach, went to be with the LORD on Sunday, November 30, 2025.
Philip was born January 4, 1956, in Marietta, Georgia, to Joseph Allen Jones and Ella Lucile Swearingen Jones. At the age of 4, Philip and his family moved to Fernandina Beach, FL. Philip graduated from Fernandina Beach High School in 1974, holding the title as President of his class. Philip was not only an avid sports enthusiast – he was an avid sports "participator". He played football, baseball, basketball, swim team, track – and his one true lifelong passion – golf. Philip was also a member of the High School Concert Choir and Madrigals. Not to mention that he was the Tri-Hi-Y Dreamboat.
After graduating from FBHS, Philip attended Berry College in Rome, Georgia on a baseball scholarship. He also attended Florida Jr. College at Jacksonville, Florida and the University of Texas, in Austin, Texas. (Hook 'em). Philip was also a devoted fan and follower of the Florida Gators.
Philip moved to Austin, Texas where he worked for the State of Texas Comptroller. He held executive level positions to include Tax Division Manager, Director of Infrastructure Operations, Interim Agency Information Technology Director, Business Relationship Liaison between IT and business divisions as well as numerous upper management positions. Upon Philip's retirement and after living in Austin for 40 years, he returned to his beloved hometown of Fernandina Beach. While living in Texas, Philip developed a love of music (especially country), Longhorns football and basketball, and the flavor of Texas food.
Philip never met a stranger. He loved people and enjoyed friendly conversations. He has a vast number of friends from every season in his life, and maintained sincere relationships with them. He also loved playing golf with his golf buddies.
Two years after returning to Fernandina Beach Philip met the love of his life, Suzanne Bass - his "sweetheart". They were married on January 1, 2020 and enjoyed a great and blessed life together.
Philip was an active member of the First Baptist Church and attended Dennis Surber's Sunday School Class. He grew in his faith and was always seeking ways to serve Jesus Christ. Philip became involved with the Kairos Prison Ministry, which he loved, as well as Community Bible Study.
Philip is preceded in death by his parents and his mother-in-law, Melba Haddock Shiver. He leaves behind his wife, Suzanne; his brothers Allan (Marian) and Mike (Eileen); a sister-in-law, Lavoyne Foster (Ronnie); stepchildren Josh Ryals (Rachael), Laura Brooke Walker (Larry), and Jack "Trey" Bass III (Katelyn); 5 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. Philip also leaves behind Levi, his devoted Catahoula Leopard dog.
The family will receive friends on Friday, December 5, at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church. The funeral service to follow at 11:00, with Dr. Zach Terry and Pastor Shad Goltz officiating. Interment will follow at Bosque Bello Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church.
Pall Bearers will be Mark Haddock, Greg Haddock, John Lang, Larry Walker, Ryan Foster and Jonathan Foster. Honorary pall bearers will be the Kairos Prison Ministry.

I lost my daughter in 2005 and God sent Philip to take my spot in the 2man memorial day tournament. I was blessed to call him a friend. The humor side made him a perfect fit with our golf group. His love of God was always present with the way he carried himself. I pray for Suzanne and family. RIP Flip
