Max Showalter Obituary

Showalter, Max

Max Showalter, of Maineville Ohio, formerly of Lafayette Indiana. Beloved husband of Arlene (Stewart) Showalter. Devoted father of Amy (Derek) Jackson. Proud grandfather of Bodie Jackson. Max is preceded in death by his parents Donal and Kay Showalter, sister Nancy Gore and brother Jimmy Showalter. Max passed away Sunday, December 3rd, 2017 at the age of 72 after a long battle with cancer.

Max was born in Marion Indiana & grew up working in his parent's grocery store in Upland Indiana. He graduated from Jefferson High School in Upland and received his bachelor's degree in journalism from Marion College. Max left WASK to pursue a career in reporting for the Journal and Courier in Lafayette, where he retired in 2012. He and Arlene then moved to Maineville Ohio, to be closer to their daughter and her family and to be able to attend all of their grandson's sports activities. Max was an avid Jimmy Buffett fan and was the President of the Lafayette chapter of the Jimmy Buffett fan club, Parrotheads in Paradise. Max also loved to listen to Bluegrass music and was also the President of the Fiddlers Group in Lafayette. He also loved baseball, in particular, the Chicago White Sox and attended their games as much as he could.

I worked with Max at KFIZ and went to a few Brewer-White Sox games with him. He was a great guy and a pleasure to work with. The last time I saw him I was in Indianapolis for work and he drove there from Lafayette for dinner and a had few beers. We had a blast talking about the KFIZ days. Thoughts and prayers go out to Arlene, Amy and his family.

KFIZ was my first real job after college and Max and Joe were a big part of the laughter around the station. He was every bit a professional newsman and someone to learn from. I certainly remember the lunch we spent at Ralph and Mama's. It took 3 days for my sinus cavity to recover! Thinking of your family and saying a prayer.

I worked a few years with Max at KFIZ in FDL. Max was a super news person, always professional and a true team player both at the station and in life. I recall his devotion to his beloved Chisox, always a big part of his summer conversation. Our best to Arlene, family and friends. Will think of him every time I hear "Come Monday"....

Both myself and my wife Sandy are saddened by Max's passing.

I had the good fortune to work for Max twice - first at WCTW Radio in New Castle right after his move from Tell City in 1972... and again at WASK Radio in Lafayette - when he came to town back in the 1980s. I enjoyed working with him and learned a lot from him.

I fondly remember sitting on the living room floor in New Castle, playing "weebles" with Amy and enjoying the family's company. It meant a lot to a single guy at the time. I also fondly remember the hours spent in the WASK newsroom with Max, and how we enjoyed our time while working hard telling stories to the community.

Max was a great mentor as well as a friend.

My deepest condolences to Arlene and to Amy and regret being unable to be there right now.

Max and I used to exchange "voicers" each morning in the 1970's when he was at KFIZ and I did morning news at WNFL up in Green Bay. We'd tip a beverage or two at radio news guy gatherings in Stevens Point, WI, when the Associated Press was buying.
May he enjoy as many "Cheeseburgers In Paradise" as his heart desires.
For you, Max, "Go Sox."

Just one of the best in media/communications. Honest and caring. The world of media needs more reporters like him. RIP, Max.

I have a heavy heart today upon hearing of Maxie's passing. He was a radio mentor of mine, and a very good friend in our KFIZ days. He taught me much, and we laughed a lot. Max truly was a great talent, and professional. Thoughts and prayers to you Arlene, and Amy. Sincerely,
Silk
