LEOMINSTER -- Alvin W. Godfrey, 92, a resident at Sunrise of Leominster, died Wed., Jan. 27, 2016, at the Leominster Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Jeanne M. (McCaffrey) Godfrey, to whom he was married for 63 years at the time of her passing on July 6th, 2015.

Born in Chatham, New Brunswick, and raised in Waltham, he was the son of the late William and Carrie Godfrey, and was the brother of the late Margaret Morrison. Mr. Godfrey served honorably during WW II in the US Army for 15 months in Central Europe with the 532nd Ordinance Tank Maintenance unit. Following his service, he was employed as a machinist at Raytheon's Waltham plant, retiring after 38 years.

A Maynard resident for 54 years, he and his family also enjoyed summers in Onset. Known as the neighborhood handyman, he was generous with his time and was very active right through his 80s. An avid gardener, Mr. Godfrey especially loved tending a huge vegetable garden at his home.

He is survived by 3 children: David A. Godfrey and wife, Pamela of Billerica, Donald W. Godfrey and wife, Carole of Rowley, and Diane M. Ranucci and husband, Joseph Jr. of Leominster; 6 grandchildren: Amy Godfrey, Michelle and Nicole Godfrey, and Craig, Alicia and Adam Ranucci; a brother, Mervyn Godfrey and wife, Norma of Waltham; and extended family members.

GODFREY -- Family and friends are invited to visiting hours Sun., Jan. 31st from 1:00-4:00 pm at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave. (Rte. 111), Acton. A prayer service will follow at 4:00 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be at a later date.
