James Godley Obituary

of Fitchburg, was chemist, Air Force vet; 79
FITCHBURG, MA James E. Godley Jr., 79, of
Fitchburg, died Wednesday morning, October 21, 2009, in The Highlands, after an illness.
He was born on May 16, 1930, in
Fitchburg, MA, the son of James E. Godley Sr. and Ruth (O'Connor) Godley, and he lived in Fitchburg all of his life.
He was a graduate of Fitchburg High School Class of 1948.
In 1951, he enlisted in the U S. Air Force and served in the 86th Bomb Squad during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1954. After the war, he went back to school and studied at Boston University where he received his Bachelor Degree in Education.
He worked 32 years as a research chemist for
Fitchburg Paper and Litton Industries, both in Fitchburg, MA. He retired in 1988.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #142 of South Ashburnham, MA. He was an avid reader and enjoyed biking, and airplane aviation. Jim loved his sports, and was a longtime supporter of high school sports at Fitchburg High School especially football.
He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, and more recently St. Joseph's Church, both in
Fitchburg, MA.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn E. (Gordon) Walker Godley; his sons, Sean M. Godley and his wife, Susan of Oklahoma, Patrick D. Godley and his wife, Paula of Leominster, MA, Kit D. Walker and his wife, Cindy of Fitchburg, MA, Micheal J. Walker and his companion, Kathy in Westminster, MA; his daughter, Honor Godley in Boston, MA; one brother, Thomas Godley in Anthony, Florida; two sisters, Ruth Batchelder in Weare, N.H., and Mary Walsh of Fitchburg, MA; 10 grandchildren,
Jason, Meghan,Robert, Shannon, Raegan, Nathaniel, Jon, Nathan, Kristen, and Heather; four great-grandchildren, Jason M., Blake, Madison, and Joseph; along with several nephews and nieces.
He was predeceased by a brother, David Godley and two sisters, Margaret Godley and Honor Godley.
GODLEY There will be calling hours held on
Friday, October 23, 2009 in The Lavery Chartrand & Alario Funeral Home, 99 Summer St. from 10 until 11:30 a.m. Graveside services in Woodside
Cemetery Westminster, MA will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jimmy Fund/Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St., Boston, MA 02115.
