James Mitchell Obituary

CLINTON / FITCHBURG

James I. "Jim" Mitchell, Jr., 78, a longtime resident of Fitchburg, formerly of Clinton, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 28, 2022. He will be remembered by many for his eternal optimism, enlightenment, and willingness to listen to anyone who sought his guidance and wisdom.

Jim will be missed by his legion of friends and family. He was an unfaltering and adoring father to his two daughters, Robin K. Mitchell, and Emily R. Mitchell, both of Brooklyn, NY. He is also survived by his former wife, with whom he spent many happy years raising his children, Maria L. (Russo) Mitchell of Newburyport; his cherished sister-in-law, Kati Mitchell of Framingham; his adored nephew, James Sung Mitchell, of Miami, FL; as well as the many good friends he considered his family. He is predeceased by his younger brother, closest confidant, and lifelong friend, George M. Mitchell, who passed away in 2013.

Jim was born and raised in Clinton, the son of James I. and Barbara C. (O'Toole) Mitchell. Known fondly as "Bim" by his family and friends in Clinton, he maintained strong ties to his hometown and its Irish American community throughout his lifetime. Following his 1961 graduation from Clinton High School, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving on active duty in Vietnam. After three years of service, he was honorably discharged and returned home to Massachusetts, where he earned a B.A. in Psychology from UMass Boston.

Jim established his home and family in Fitchburg. Shortly prior to the birth of his first daughter, Jim was given a life-threatening cancer diagnosis that was the result of exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam. He was blessed with the good fortune of full remission and another 35 years of life to raise both of his daughters, Robin, and Emily.

Throughout the last many years, he spent the spring, summer, and autumn seasons hiking, biking, and exploring New England and beyond with his daughters and many friends.

Jim spent his entire professional career in support of fellow service members. For over 30 years, he worked as a substance abuse counselor at Hanscom Air Force Base and at Fort Devens, where he faithfully served fellow combat veterans and their families. After retirement, he remained continuously active in the veteran community, volunteering with Vet Centers and was a dedicated member of the Yoga Warriors Program of Central Mass. It was with the Yoga Warriors that he was able to lift the weight of his PTSD and heal himself amongst an invaluable community of fellow veterans.

Jim's funeral will be held on Monday, March 14, 2022, with a Mass at 10:00 AM in St. John the Evangelist Church, 80 Union Street, Clinton. Please go directly to the church. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Sunday, March 13, 2022, from 5:00-7:00 PM at McNally & Watson Funeral Home, 304 Church Street, Clinton. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Jim, to support the Yoga Warriors. Jim and I were very close friends in college, and I knew George also. We shared many happy moments walking around Boston and talking about everything under the sun. He had a great sense of Irish humor. We lost touch after U Mass but I thought of him often over the years. Last night I had a vivid dream about Jim and I suspected that he had died. I searched for his obituary this morning. I am sad to learn of his death. He was the big brother that I never had.

I'm very sorry to hear about Jim's passing. I am sorry to say I hadn't talked to Jim in years after working together and living in Jim's house before I moved away. One of the truly great and nice guys. Condolences to Jim's family and Maria. He will be missed.

I will always remember Jim as a gentle and kind man, but most of all I will remember him as a yoga warrior, as he always gave me inspiration in life and in yoga. You will never be missed, as you will always be with me on my yoga mat. Rest in peace my fellow yogi.

I did not know Jim as long or as deeply as his many friends. But in the brief years knew of his compassion and support for others. We were both born Clintonians, so shared common conversation about “our hometown” Condolences to his family and close friends.

My favorite cousin. Always curious and interested in the world around him. Adored his two daughters.
One of the happiest times of his life was their gift to him of a Cape Cod trip for his 75th birthday .

Truly sorry to hear of Jim's passing. I only knew him a few years thru the gym, and bike riding on the rail trails. We had lost touch during the pandemic but in the short time I knew him I found him to be a great person and felt a genuine honor just to know him.
My deepest sympathies go out to his family, and friends of a truly awesome man. Take Care and Be Well.

Bim was a much loved first cousin of mine. We last had lunch together three years ago at the Simple Man Saloon on High Street in Clinton. Before we met, I drove my car a couple of blocks further down High Street to my grandparents/father's house, parking the car in the driveway just to remember all the many happy times I had there. Just this week, I was reminded that I needed to go back to the Simple Man and see my cousin again. Sadly, I won't have that opportunity. Bim was and remains one of my last links to my family's Clinton history and we talked a lot about that history during our lunches together. What I remember most about him was the incredible patience he had; always a great listener. Rest in peace cousin. You will be missed.

Jimmy was my much loved cousin. We both have October birthdays and for many years I've emailed him on October 4 to announce the kick off of the birthday season. He always emailed me back and told me how things were going, and how much too quickly Robin and Emily were growing up. Jim was also a guest at many of our family Thanksgivings, which always lasted two days. He was a "day two" presence and it was always wonderful to see him come through the door. I'll miss him very much.
Robin, Emily, Maria, Sung and Kati, you, and of course, my dear cousin George, lit up Jim's life. He was so blessed to have you, just as we were to have him.
