FITCHBURG -- JoAnne (Spinner) Fitz, 85 passed away Sunday, October 30 at her residence.

Mrs. Fitz was born on Decemeber 4, 1931 in Buena Vista, VA a daughter of the late Calvin R. Booker and Mary Louise Spinner and has resided in Fitchburg for many years.

She was the wife of the late William H. Fitz Sr.

Mrs. Fitz is survived by her daughters Alicia A.V. Fitz of Fitchburg, Mary Louise Perry and her husband Rev. Dr. Leroy of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., sons, Curtis L. Fitz of Fitchburg, Anthony K. Spinner of Charlotte, N.C., Elder Charles D. Guthrie and his wife Florece of Troy, N.Y., twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was the mother of the late William H. Fitz, Jr.

Mrs. Fitz had previously worked at Burlington Industries/James Lee Company in Glasgow, VA for many years. She also went to school to study home interior and decorating.

Mrs. Fitz was very active in the New Hope Community Church in Ayer. She was active in the Fitchburg community for over forty years focusing on Civil Rights, politics and the concerns of all people. She became a "Mother" to all who knew her, offering spiritual guidance and sound moral wisdom.

FITZ -- A funeral service will be held Saturday, Nov. 5 at 11:00am at the Rollstone Congregational Church, 199 Main St., Fitchburg. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 Friday, Nov. 4 at the Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg.

I am so blessed to have had a second mother like "Mama".We had many wonderful conversations over coffee and doing her nails. One piece of advice she gave me was to get out of God's way and let him do his work.Now..I have another Angel watching over me. Mama you will always be with me in my heart and mind. To the family of JoAnne Fitz:
I have nothing but wonderful memories of hanging out at the home of Mrs. Fitz. She always had pearls of wisdom for me as a young teenager and throughout my adulthood. Having grown up with her children, I always admired how she would change the style of her home so quickly through the magic of her sewing, creativeness, and fabric. Today, we call it DYI and have shows about it!

Now God has taken Mrs. Fitz home, and she will be missed, and many tears will be shed. But HER faith in the Lord and devotion to HIM will provide the strength to her family and friends. The Lord will wrap His arms of love and comfort around those who trust in Him.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted (Matthew 5:4).

We have loss a great icon in the City of Fitchburg. We send our condolences to the family and our prayers are with you all. I have known this great icon for almost 50 years and she always was a lady, first and foremost. She named me "Buddy" because she said that she never had a brother and she was adopting me as her brother. Ms. Fitz is perhaps one of the greatest civil rights leaders that I have ever known of in the Central Massachusetts area. There is no question about it, I will miss her fellowship that we have had over the years - she was always my rock and I was always her rock. Ms. Fitz always enjoyed talking about politics and over the years she was able to help registered voters to perform their civic duties by voting for elected leaders local, state and at the national level. Ms. Fitz always did her best in helping others and specially those that had children and I guess that's why she picked up the name mother Fitz. There is no question that she's going to be missed by her loved ones but I am sure that there will be countless of people that are going to have a big void in their life because she is not here for them communicate with; I'm going to be one of those individuals. She was my friend and I'm glad that I have the memory to reflect back on, because she was a true friend that could always be depended on.

I am deeply sorry for your loss. I have so many memories of your Mom. Joanne was a wonderful and proud woman and always told you how she felt and the truth. She taught me a lot when I was younger and loved me no matter what. I have never and will never forget her. RIP Joanne!!!!

So sorry to hear about the lost of your mother. Last time I saw her was at my mother's (her sister Ruth) funeral 32 years ago this past August.
