Josiah Frost Obituary

Josiah Frederick Frost, retired fire chief and former selectman for the town of Sudbury, died at New England Medical/Marlboro Hospital after a period of declining health. He was 86, and the husband of Beverly (Grant) Frost.

Mr. Frost was born in Waltham, the son of the late Guernsey Locke Frost and Margery Pierce Frost. His family first settled in Sudbury in 1932, and Mr. Frost also lived for a time in Belmont and Melrose prior to returning to Sudbury. In more recent years, he had made his home with his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer A. and Carl E. Sund, in Lunenburg. Following graduation from Melrose High School, he served with the United States Army during World War II. Upon returning to Sudbury to raise his family, Mr. Frost served the town in many capacities -- he was a call firefighter from 1937-1943 and 1953-57. He was appointed a fire lieutenant in 1966, fire captain in 1967 and fire chief in 1974, retiring in 1983. He was a co-founder of the Lincoln-Sudbury Town Employees Federal Credit Union, and served on numerous committees over the years. He was a graduate of Central Middlesex Academy Fire Training School and member and past president of Massachusetts Fire Chiefs Association, a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, and a longtime member of the Sudbury Kiwanis. He was a First Lt. in the Civil Air Patrol, where he achieved his pilot’s license. Chief Frost was honored by the town of Sudbury as the 1996-97 Citizen of the Year.

In addition to his wife, daughter and son-in-law, he also leaves his son and daughter-in-law, David P. and Janet L. Frost of Leominster and his son and daughter-in-law, Peter A. and Norma Frost of Westminster. He was the brother of Robert W. Frost of Texas and Charles Addison Frost of Sudbury. He also leaves eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

FROST -- Funeral services will be held tonight, at 7 at the Duckett-J.S. Waterman & Sons Home of Memorial Tribute, 656 Boston Post Road, Sudbury. Visiting hours will be from 3-7 p.m. prior to the memorial service. Private interment will be in New Town Cemetery, Sudbury. Donations in memory of Mr. Frost should be directed to Alzheimer’s Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 211 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472, or to one’s local Lyons Club Eye Care Program.

As a fellow fire chief and fire instructor, I knew Joe Frost very well. He was ahead of his time and influential in establishing the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy. He will be greatly missed.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Chief Frost was a great person and a friend to the Mass.Fire Instructors which I was president at the time we first met. MIFDI had plenty of meeting in Sudbury thanks to Chief Frost. We will miss him.
