former area schoolteacher, 79
POMPANO BEACH, FL -- Dr. Shirley Richardson Benoit, 79, passed away July 11, 2013 in Pompano Beach, FL.
She graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1952 and then went on to Fitchburg State Teachers' College to receive her teaching degree. Shirley received her Master's degree from Nova University and her Ph.D. from the University of Southern California (Walton University). She taught in the elementary schools of Athol, Fitchburg and Leominster, MA. She also taught in the Griffin Elementary School in Cooper City, FL. This school received the "School of Excellence" award for the entire United States. She worked with students of the exceptionalities. She also worked at Pan-Am Airlines in New York City as a cryptographer and as a professor at the Florida Institute of Technology.
Shirley leaves her husband, Norman Benoit, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; two step chidren, Norman Benoit and Suzanne Sanchez; two sisters, Sandy Cregar and her husband, Royall, and Faith Arnold and her husband, Scott; two nieces, MaryLee Daniels and Hope Swaney; and two nephews, Douglas Cregar and Brad Arnold.
She was predeceased by her nephew Keith Arnold.
Shirley will be sadly missed and loved by family and friends.

Shirley was a true lady who taught me to sip not slurp, to sit not plop. And how to put on make up to flatter not flash.
She had a heart of gold and the spine of steel. I didn't appreciate her as I should have.
Her greatest accomplishment, keeping my father happy for 45 years.
Thank you Shirley. Rest in peace.

I always looked forward to my summertime visits to Fort Lauderdale to spend time with you and Uncle Norman. I also enjoyed our holiday visits. You will be forever missed!
