In Ecclesiastics we are told that there is a time and a purpose for everything. Even though Steven's time with us was short, his purpose would be a memorable one and time well spent. Sharing was Stephen's God given blessing, and Stephen's sharing gave us all wonderful memories. For example, Stephen shared his life with all of us in our near perfect neighborhood. As a young boy he shared with us his warm and gentle personality and sense of humor. He shared with us his million dollar smile that its brilliance dimmed sunlight. He shared with us his generosity and his unending friendship.
How can we ever forget the Halloweens, the many games played in our yards and Stephen's thrills and spills while sledding down frozen Long Hill Drive. How can we ever forget the summers spent in our pools and the daily hello's and goodbye's as Stephen headed home after a long day playing whatever with the boys. Personally, through his young years I marveled at Stephen as I would often say to myself, there goes a good kid.
There is one long ago memory I will always remember. It was the time Stephen played in the Little League. In one particular game, Stephen was the pitcher and was doing quite well. Here is the memory I will never forget. Stephen pitched to the plate and the batter hit ball, but not very far. The hit was a short popup right in front of Stephen. Stephen lunged forward and made a diving catch. It was a spectacular catch. I was so moved by this play I yelled back at Stephen and said, You are a great baseball player. I was so full of emotion at what I just saw, You are a great baseball player is all I could come up with. But I meant it. Steven was sharing his talent in playing America's greatest pastime, but in that brief moment making that diving catch, Stephen was the greatest baseball player anyone has ever seen.
Stephen shared with us his many wonderful qualities without reservation. All of us in my family, and I am sure all in the others, accepted Stephen's sharing of his life. Steven shared with us his total youth of which we all embrace in his memory.
And now, Stephen is being embraced by our Lord God, who is saying to him right now, thanks for sharing your life with others. You did exactly what I asked you to do.
We love you Stephen. Thank you for sharing your life with us.
