Bruce Florine Obituary

FLORINE, Bruce M. - Of Chicago, formerly of Flint, age 52, died Friday, September 30, 2011 in Berrien County, Michigan. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 402 South Ballenger Hwy, Flint, Pastor Steven R. Maske officiating. Cremation will take place following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made directed to St. Paul Lutheran Endowment Fund. Visitation 6-8 p.m. Monday and 1-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. Bruce will be at the church 10 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the service. Bruce was born in Flint on August 8, 1959, the son of Robert and Shirley (Scott) Florine. He graduated from Carman High School, Class of 1977 and received his Bachelors Degree in Entertainment Management and Vocal Music from Oakland University in 1982. Bruce was a board member of the Streeterville Organization of Active Residents, (SOAR) until he recently resigned his seat on the board so his consulting firm, Madison Collective, could perform marketing and sponsorship work for SOAR. He was also a consultant to the PGA of America and was working on preparations for the Ryder Cup, the most prestigious tournament in international golf that will be held in the Chicago area next year. Bruce was instrumental in recent promotional events for the tournament, including a spectacular event involving Ryder Cup Captains Davis Love III and Jose Maria Olazabal hitting seven-iron shots from the 16th floor of Trump Tower to a makeshift target on a barge in the Chicago River. A kind and caring man, Bruce was particularly excited about the philanthropic opportunities presented by the Ryder Cup. He was working closely with Ronald McDonald House of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana, and the PGA Foundation on a number of projects to benefit the two organizations and support them in their charitable missions. He loved music, his family and his dog, Madison. Surviving are parents, Robert and Shirley Florine of Swartz Creek; brother, David (Sharon) Florine of Hickory, NC; sisters, Linda (Ronald) Bleck of Whitewater, WI and Bethany Florine of Flint; uncles, Howard (Mary Ann) Florine of Elk Grove, IL, Robert (Eileen) Scott of Grand Blanc; aunt, Janet (Roger) Erickson of Woodbury, MN; nieces and nephews, Sara (Corey) Green, Katie (James) Hueseman, Jacob (Kim) Florine, Aaron Bleck, Jason Bleck; great nephews, Malachi and Isaiah Green, Joshua and Caleb Hueseman; and many cousins, special friends and colleagues in the golf community. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert W. Florine. Your condolences may be shared with the family at swartzfuneralhomeinc.com.

It is with great sadness to hear about the recent news of Bruce. He was a great leader during my time at Momentum, and I enjoyed catching up with him several times in the years afterwards. He was a person to emulate not only for his energy and insightfulness, but also for how he treated people with respect and sincerity. I will always remember him with high regard and wish all in the Florine family my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Terry Shaughnessy

I can't begin to express how saddened I was to hear of Bruce's untimely call to heaven. Although I have only faint memories of our time together at St.Paul (mostly from Lee Ann talking about him all the time) I will always remember how engaging he was when I would run into him at various St.Paul functions. He would always make a point of asking about me and my family. I don't pretend to understand why things like this happen. It is only our faith in God that gives us the strength to go on. I will be praying diligently for you and you loved ones to draw strength from your faith and find peace.

I only smile when I think of Bruce and his wacky sense of humor, amazing energy, bazillion ideas and his zest for life. I've had the pleasure of knowing Bruce for 3 years but in those 3 years we have some awesome memories, dancing and laughing at my wedding, to Bruce and Madison stopping by for a cupcake(s), late nights working, wine and cheese brainstorming to our latest lunch a couple of weeks ago(after countless reschedules, thank god we squeezed it in) when we talked about all the great things in your life and those that were yet to come. I will miss you and your sense of humor but I will never forget and smile when I think of you.

I remember working with Bruce at the PGA of America many years ago, I think we were both still in our 20's. He and Andy O'Brien were always making me smile. Bruce would be driving down PGA Blvd. in a jeep and all of a sudden you would here this " yehaw ... hey Steph". I'm sure that Bruce is making people smile in heaven. My prayers are with your family that you may find peace during this time of sadness.
