Uncle Egbert

“I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought, and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories.” —Leo Buscaglia
My heart is filled with emotions when I think about Uncle Egbert. I promised him that I would have visited him. He was sad and in pain in my last conversation with him, and I again promised to visit but then COVID happened and I was not able to do so before his passing!
Uncle Egbert and Cherry, my Mom, were the two siblings residing in Jamaica along with cousin Keith. I have fond memories of uncle Egbert. Our trips to the beach and his cooking. Uncle Egbert could certainly cook!
I remember my uncles and aunts visiting Jamaica and the jokes that erupted from their reminiscing about childhood memories. The stories that uncle would tell and the stories that were told about him were priceless! When uncle was around, there was laughter, plenty of tasty food, and lots of jokes!
Uncle was precious. He was the spice, that flavoured for every occasion.
He had many ups and downs in his life but he always seemed to bounce back. Well, so it seemed until he succumbed to this last ailment!
Uncle Egbert will always be loved, cherished, and held in a special place in the hearts of those who loved him. The members of the Clue Family express their love and condolences to the friends and family of Egbert Golding.

My Early Memories of My Brother EGBERT up to when I was age 13:
Growing up inJamaica with my brother Egbert aka Eggie, aka Brother Dear, these are my memories of him.
1) He was such a fun brother. Loveable, popular and protective of his siblings and cousins. No one messed around with us or gave us a hard time because they knew they would have a reckoning with Egbert☺. He looked out for us.
2) He was also a bundle of fun, a comedian and had everyone in stitches with his jokes and the way in which he delivered any scenario.
There was never a dull moment when he was around. He was charismatic, the life and soul of our family and also within our small community of West Prospect. He drew people to him like a magnet.
3) He was also very mischievous and kept our parents (especially Pappi) on their feet with his shenanigans.
Many times neighbours would come calling to our house and we would hear 'Mr. Golding or Masa Iva, hold the dog then Sa. You Know what you son Egbert do now Sa'. And Pappi would say 'Come, Come tell me what the boy do now' Pappi calming who ever it is by saying - "Lawd that boy, just leave it to me I gonna deal with him"
4) Egbert removing the scarecrow out of the field and putting it late at night at Cashew Walk Road to frighten people on their way home from church. Egbert hiding in the bushes to observe their reaction. When they start screaming (mistaking the scarecrow for a gohst) he would leap up laughing his head off and the people shouting Eggie we gonna tell Mass Ivor
5) Pappi was always chasing him up and down the hill for 'Egbert to get a beating'
Some silly things he did to me and me yelling "Pappi Egbert do this to me" and Pappi saying "Boy come here me a go deal with you"
6) Egbert and our dad Pappi having some unforgettable times together. Their dancing competitions one trying to outdo the other. Their crazy political debates. Pappi being a Labour and Egbert being a PNP
7) I remember Egbert's serious sides as well, kind and caring, cycling me when I was very ill to Linstead to the Doctor/Hospital.Looking out for me when I was so ill and could not walk or go to school for nearly 9 months.
8) He was a fantastic cook. The sweet taste of his cooking.
Helping me look after my pet pigs Broctilian and Mungo. Taking me swimming and fishing at the river. Our home was full of laughter and vibrancy with his presence.
9) All through the 50 years plus we here in the UK never stopped reminiscing about our childhood experiences growing up together and because of that Egbert your nieces, nephew and grand nieces knew about and loved you even before they actually met you.
10) I missed Egbert when I left Jamaica for Endland at age 13 but he was never forgotten. When we again met decades later the bond was still there, still strong and have remained so over the ensuing years and our periodical comming together.
11) Love and miss you Brother Dear. You will always be in my heart and memories. Sleep and rest. Mama is waiting for you.♀

Precious memories... how they linger...
Uncle Egbert was a warm and generous human being.
He had the innate ability to make us all laugh, without even trying. He also had a tender ❤ heart.
I will miss our telephone conversations across the Atlantic and his occasional visits to the UK, where he and his siblings would reminisce about their days growing up in Bog Walk, Jamaica.
It was wonderful to hear the stories of uncle's escapades at Tulloch School - putting a screw in his teacher's cane, getting extra lunch from the school kitchen or defending his sisters.
Fiercely loyal, family was important to Uncle Egbert. It was always a joy to celebrate meaningful events with him- we always had such fun.
We were blessed and honoured to have known him. He will be sorely missed.
Rest in Eternal Peace Uncle Egbert
Much love always

It is with sadness I write this message about uncle Egbert. To me you were loving and caring uncle.
My fondest memory is when I went to the beach swimming in s small tyre and going out too far. I cried splashing and making a lot of noise, that's when I saw uncle coming quickly to get me. He was there in no time and I was safely back on the beach. I also remember the many visits from uncle when I lived in Jamaica as a small girl.
Although I live in England and you were in Florida I never forget the love and care you showed me.
When you came to England for Samie's wedding I was over joyed and glad to see you. When you saw me you just called my name and I never forget how you gave me a huge. You had a very wide smile too.
I will cherish these memories. There were times when the family would reminice about how they has siblings grew up. There would be so much lot laughter and jokes. I found out uncle how comical you were.
I will never forget you and miss you. You will forever be in my heart.

Tribute To My Brother - Egbert Lennard Golding.
My brother, my friend Egbert aka Eggi, Funnyman, Golding.
He was one of a kind and this is just a synopsis as time is of the essence.
I have been truly blessed to have had a brother like Egbert.
He was very protective of his sisters. When any of the older children at Primary School (Tulloch) tried to bully us, he would literally step into the breach and fight for us. We certainly had nothing to worry about when he was around.
Egbert was certainly the comedian among the siblings. There was never a dull moment when he was around. Lots of laughs...
Egbert had great dress style. His photos attest to that. So sharp and he was rarely seen without his hat or cap
He was very kind and I benefited from his generosity.
One such time was when my sister Cherry I visited Egbert for Christmas, not long after he relocated to Palm Bay.
Egbert shopped as if he was going to feed an army and he refused to take any contribution from us, even though Nadine and her flatmate would be joining us. Not to mention the car he rented for us while we were there.
Although the miles separated us, the bond remained strong. We met in Jamaica, Canada and London when time permitted.
Before he became ill last year, we used to have long conversations almost weekly.
Even after he could not speak, the conversations continued;even though it was mainly one way. He was having speech therapy and he tried desperately to speak.
I will always treasure those beautiful memories of my brother...my friend.
So much more I could say, but....
Sleep on my brother, take your rest.
Miss you awfully. Will miss that greeting on the telephone,
"Jean... this is your brother Egbert."
We love you but Jesus loves you best...
Goodnight❤Jean (Blossom)

Uncle Egbert........
With fondness I will always remember you.
Your free and hearty, 'teeth-showing' laughter and of those twinkling eyes.
My first memory of you was your visit to your big brother's home in Montreal Canada. You brought light and delight to a teenager's day.
You were there when I got my first ten-speed bike. You were more excited than me. You were there to support me when I ran for my track and field race. It was the 4X4. You were standing at the gate and when the batton touched my hand I could hear you roaring and cheering me on. Even when I had passed you and was on the other side of the track sprinting I could hear, "Run Samie! Run!" We came in first place and you were so excited!
Years later you came to England and loved and supported me as a got married. You always had words of comfort and encouragement.
Although we didn't get to physically see one another since then I enjoyed face-timing you. You were still your comedic self. Even later on when I knew it wasn't easy......you put on a brave face and loved up on me, George and Zara.
I am going to miss you. You will always be in my heart.
Love you Uncle Egbert

Uncle Egbert will always have a very special place in my heart mainly because of how much he reminded me of my dad. Uncle Egbert was a welcoming, kind, accommodating soul with an incredible sense of humor; yet fearless and never one to “back down”. I will always treasure our countless conversations about knowing “your roots” and was often amazed at his ability to recall the family’s history and lineage.
Admittedly, and without shame, some of my fondest memories of him revolved around his supernatural ability to tantalize my palate and I am certain many persons can also attest to this. Simply put, he was a culinary genius. However, despite his wizardry in the kitchen, his main culinary shortcoming was not knowing how to cook for less than a dozen persons, even if he was in fact catering for only two. I remember my family spending part of our vacation with him in 2014. I came away from that visit surmising that he completely forgot that we were a family of four. Afterall, no ordinary man could have prepared that much food for a family which included two small children. To make matters even more interesting, as we prepared to leave his home, he carefully packaged the extra portions (about four days worth by my calculation) and instructed us to take it on our road trip. Needless to say, our vacation food bill was significantly reduced.
True to his core, he was always about family and took great pride in maintaining contact as well as connecting family members with each other. In a way, this embodied the spirit of the man I knew and loved. Always willing, reaching out and going far beyond what is required. He never once hesitated to open his home to my family and we will be eternally grateful for the wonderful memories we shared.
Rest in peace Uncle Egbert.
