Frances Pogoreltz Baker, 89, of Melbourne, FL, died Monday, December 8, 2014, and is now enjoying a reunion with family and friends she has not seen in a long time, including her husband, Ernest Baker; parents, Frank and Mary Baric Retzel Pogoreltz; brothers, Frank, Ludwig, Ernest and Henry Retzel and Louis Pogoreltz; sisters, Mary ("Mamie") and Angeline Retzel, Angeline Samsa, Helen Kotar and Emily Fradette; and grandson, Frederick John Dressel.  Her spirit is carried on by her children, Ernest Bradley (Susie) Baker, Kimberley (Frederick "Darby") Dressel, and Valerie (Craig) Cameron; three grandchildren, Derick Dressel, Erika (Scott) Mobley, and Briana Baker; great-grandson, Jack Mobley; and many nieces and nephews who she dearly loved.

After working for many years for Patrick AFB and Kennedy Space Center, Frances opened and operated her own court reporting firm.  With each passing year, Frances forged more of her own path:  she focused on nutrition and healthy eating before it was popular, enjoyed dance and golf, and became an accomplished artist.

Her children were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Frances, among them:  be deserving of the unconditional love our pets give us; don't let the size of your table limit your guest list; welcome in-laws and significant others in celebrations; love, respect and support your family; walk a mile in their shoes before you criticize; and this too shall pass.  She lived in the belief of a spirit that is shared by all animals and mankind; in mankind's universal responsibility to care for the environment and all living things; and in the inherent goodness and divinity of people.  She championed intellectual curiosity and education, and scorned prejudice.  And she had the most beautiful smile.

Just like her mother, who became a widow with six children while pregnant with the seventh, Fran was a model of strong will and determination.  Even after she fell and broke her hip, she insisted on washing a load of clothes before allowing Brad to drive her to the hospital.  And when she came to terms with the advancing effects of dementia, she articulated that she chose to be joyful during her remaining time:  enjoying what became affectionately known as sangria Sundays, lunch overlooking the harbor, ice cream, and visits from family, not necessarily in that order!

The family suggests you smile and celebrate Fran's spirit in your own way.  Consistent with her request, no services are scheduled.  A family celebration of Fran and her beloved brothers and sisters will be planned for next year.
