Barbara Essa Obituary

GENEVA – Barbara Ann Essa passed away peacefully on August 3, 2023, with her loving family at her side.

Family and friends are invited to attend her Funeral Service on Saturday, (August 12) at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Orthodox Church, Genesee Street, Geneva. (Family condolences will be received at 10:30 a.m. in the church vestibule.) The burial will immediately follow the service in Glenwood Cemetery. Guests are welcome to wear Barb's favorite color, yellow.

Barb was born in Geneva, NY, on September 23, 1930, the daughter of the late Sam and Mary (Brown) Essa. She was a graduate of Geneva High School and went on to work at Sweeney & Son Insurance, Henry Shepard Smith and finally, Finger Lakes Partners Insurance. Barb was a passionate supporter of the Salvation Army, working in the food pantry, serving in various leadership roles including the Board of Directors, and ultimately receiving the Lifetime Advisory Board Membership Award. She was a lifelong member of St. Michael's Orthodox Church where she taught Sunday School for several decades, served as Treasurer of the Church's Ladies Organization, and was a Dame of the Order of Saint Ignatius. Barb belonged to the Geneva Chapter of Zonta Organization and was on the Geneva City Planning Board for a number of years.

More than anything else, Barb was devoted to her family and friends. She is survived by her nieces and nephews: Mary (Mark) Hamlet, Michael (Barbara) Abraham, Thomas (Kylene) Abraham, John (Olga Padilla) Zakour, Mary Zakour (Stephen) Erdman, Mitchell (Sigrid Johannessen) Ganem, Lawrence (Lisa Terry) Ganem, and Jennifer (Dan Gilligan) Ganem; 13 great nieces and nephews: Mary & Christine; Matt, John & Alexandra; Jay; Jackson & Kalie; Mae, Ella, Colin & Ruby; and Harris. Also, her loving Goddaughter, Michelle and several life-long friends.

In addition to her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her siblings: Mitchell (Martha) Abraham, George (Violet) Abraham, Nancy (Irving) Pinckney, Genevieve Essa, Evelyn (Michael) Zakour, and Shirley (Phillip) Ganem.3

To honor her memory, donations may be sent to the Geneva Salvation Army (easternusa.salvationarmy.org/empire/geneva), St. Barbara Orthodox Monastery (sbmonastery.org) or a charity of choice.
