James Callahan Obituary

CLAYTON, N.C./SENECA FALLS– James "Jim" William Callahan, 84, passed away peacefully at home on May 5, 2024 surrounded by family.

Jim was born in Chatham N.Y. to Mary Cook and Robert Callahan on February 7, 1940. Jim was employed for 43 years at ITT Goulds Pumps in Seneca Falls, N.Y. He was a union member and served as the secretary with the United Steelworkers of America during that time. Jim also worked with the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier servicing both the Romulus and Ovid areas. Upon retirement Jim and Linda moved to North Carolina, residing in Knightdale and finally Clayton, N.C. Those who knew him well, know that he was a quiet man, but one that would do anything for his friends and family; he was always there lending a helping hand to anyone that needed it.

Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman. He never missed any of the sporting events his girls were a part of. He spent time teaching and coaching multiple sports including soccer and softball. He spent many years in various clubs in Waterloo and Newark, for both round and square dancing. He was inducted into the Waterloo Sports Hall of Fame in 2021 as a member of the 1956-1957 Boys Basketball team. Jim enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, and taking many motorcycle trips.

He is survived by his wife, Linda of 48 years; daughters Mary Lou Haines (Joseph) of Seneca Falls N.Y., Cynthia Callahan of Cortland N.Y., Jacqueline Avery (Tony DeFranco) of Garner N.C., Jaime Malone (James) of Clayton N.C., Leanne Callahan (Tom Corey) of Auburn N.Y., and Erica Forbes (Ben) of Clayton N.C. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Alexia Salerno (Dexter Eaves) of Auburn N.Y., and Bailey Salerno of Waterloo N.Y., Jaxson and Olivia Malone, and Zachary Forbes of Clayton N.Y.

He was predeceased by his mother Mary Cook Callahan and Robert Callahan.

Based on his wishes, there will be no calling hours or service.

My condolences to the Callahan Family. Jim was a fellow rural carrier and I always enjoyed his attendance at our county union meetings. I always looked forward to seeing Jim and the others from the south end of the county at our annual meeting. Jim´s daughter, Jamie, helped care for my dogs when she worked at All Creatures. You are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Linda and all of Jim's loving family. We are so saddened to learn of Jim's passing. Jim was a great friend whom you could trust and yes he was there for you at any time you needed any help and it didn't matter what it was. When you were in his company, there was a lot of laughter. Jim will be greatly missed by his family and his many, many friends. May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. RIP Jim.
